hello all,

FINALLY got around to installing my speedo cable today (spins up the top but speedo doesn't work. busted speedo?), and in the process I managed to come across this loose blue wire. does it go into that black thing?



is it for the temp gauge? because that's not working anymore. i tried it in the black thing but nothing happened. would that be because the copper part is missing? i don't think it was there when i pulled the cluster out. the amount that it is stripped suggests so. but this also suggests that putting it in there in such a way that it bends around would make the relevant instrument work fine?

also, i think i broke this blue thing, in the pic just above where the globe holder is supposed to go. is this for the right indicator bulb? because that's not working anymore either (and not because the globe is missing ). what is this part called, and can it be fixed or do i have to buy a new one? i reckon it will be expensive...



i had a look at the wiring diagram but it does not list a plain blue wire... is this a replacement with whatever the person had at the time? if it's for the temp gauge shouldn't it be green?

i think that's all, I'll keep going and see what i can do.

Follow the blue wire and see where it goes.

The blue thing that you broke is called the "printed circuit" they are not available new. You can solder a wire across the break to fix it.

To test the speedo poke a small screwdriver or similar into the square on the back of the speedo where the cable goes and spin it, the needle should flick.

the blue wire goes straight back to the fuse box

I would be unpluging it!
I wonder what they had that needed power from the fusebox, possibly a radio or accessory of some sort.

but you see the black part in the first photo, the left most socket, should there be a wire there?

speedo needle flickered so the cable just must not have been in there enough

I don't think so, I would have to check (or preferably wait for someone else to check)

Sometimes the square is not square and the cable spins inside it. Or it was just not pushed right in.

I just checked the wiring diagram and pin #1 does not have a wire on it. You need to look closely at the plug to see if it has numbers next to the pin.

pin #1 has a green wire with white trace. pin #7 is empty. you reckon the black thing is upside down?

persistence with the speedo then? i'm not trying to get it done in a hurry, just relaxing so it has not annoyed me at all. brilliant.

EDIT: bridged the gap and put a working globe in the indicator, but still no go. will try the bridge again.

Just checked a plug in the shed and it does not have a wire on that spot.

I just checked the book again and # 1 should have a green with a white trace (just like yours!)
According to the book #4 is supposed to be empty. Don't worry I am sure that yours is right.
The temp gauge is Green with a Blue trace and goes to pin #3. (or some random pin anyway!)

you'd think that the pins would be constant, because the circuits go to the gauges?

Don't believe the books...
Last time I put a wiper switch on my son's Clubby I followed the book, and it didn't work...
Had to crawl under the dash of my 78 project to suss it out.
The wires were in different places, of course.

pin 3 has a green wire with a blue trace, i followed the printed circuit around and it ends at a screw, roughly where the temp gauge is...

so many bloody green wires though!

ok got the indicator working. turns out the little copper tab had folded up and there was no contact...

AND just realised i unplugged the temp gauge before... I'm winning!!

will go and have a crack at that speedo now
