Hey all,

This is probably a n00b question but I have searched and can't find the answer. This may be coz I am searching for the wrong thing though.

I am fitting some new gaskets on the weekend when putting things back together ( water pump, screw on filter and a couple more). I have got new gaskets and was wondering if I have the correct procedure.

1. remove old gasket using a razor blade.
2. Clean up both surfaces with fine emory or sand paper.
3 put on gasket ( not sure if any adhesive should be used here
4. tighten bolts the the correct torque.

Do I need to do anything more and do people use any sort of adhesive such as gasket glue and the like? I don't think so but just checking as its the first time and the bible ( mini work shop manual) didn't say...that I could see.

I like to use permatex red silicone. Its good stuff. Dont put heaps on because most will squeeze out.

Like Tombo says, the wipe clean is essential but I prefer to use metho.
The gasket remover spray is good stuff too, makes scraping easier.

Yes , just a smear , if you put too much on it will bulge out either side of the join and in some cases chunks of it can become a foreign object floating around in the oil .

Just a smear, what squeezes out isn't doing anything.
P.s. the packaging has changed, i couldnt find a more recent picture.

Don't use silicone. It will create more problems in the long term. When silicone gets into an oil gallery or even when it fills a blind hole it can damage an engine.

Use a real gasket cement like Permatex No3 (or Loctite Aviation Gasket Cement)

The Permatex in the pic above is now branded `Loctite'.
I used it for ages, but for the last 5 years I've used Loctite 515 Master Gasket instead. Unlike the Permatex it will never let go, it is designed to replace gaskets.

I don't use diff side cover gaskets now, the current ones are too thick and need a big pile of shims. Just a smear of Loctite 515.

Please don't use the Red Form-a-gasket silicone stuff!

Please think about the next guy that has to remove the gasket! Give the gasket a light smear of petroleum jelly and she'll be good as gold..... Well it worked on my car.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of your help. I might get me some of the loctite 515. Is this easy to find? Where i work on my car they have repco, supercheap and autobarn so it should be ok to find in one of them i am guessing.

Thanks again, you all are so helpful for a newb like me.

Bearing shops stock it, & sell it cheaper than most other places.
