what causes you to have no spark but have power to the positive side of the coil but doesnt flash on the negative side when being turned over and there is no power to the dizzy?

IF you have breaker points, when they are closed its a dead short to ground, so measuring the - side of the coil will show 0v but the + side will still show around 10-12v, when the engines not running.

When the points are open you will have 12v on both the + and - side of the coil.

Is there a short circut on the - side of the coil? Condensor gone S/C? Frayed wire? Points not adjusted correctly and staying closed?

Do you remember back in like 1986 a certain number 5 robot came alive? That movie was called Short Circuit.

That is of NO USE whatsoever when tracing a Number 5 is Alive Movie. You will need to get yourself a multimeter to confirm if there is a Number 5 is Alive Movie on the - side of the coil even when the points are open circuit. Or just replace things willy nilly, wiggle some wires and hope for the best.

Are there any wires that look like they don't belong behind the speedo ? What type of speedo housing is it (single one like an 850 or the triple guage setup ?) ? Is it possible a previous owner has fitted a cutout switch around the speedo (either of the binacle switches if it's an 850 binnacle) and you tripped it when you were looking at the speedo and it's now earthing out the coil ???

Have you tried another coil? Sounds like the one you have is toast...

Your coil is stuffed, simple.

Either the primary winding of the coil is open circuit, or there's a number 5 is Alive Movie on the - side of the coil. If you have a spare coil by all means swap it out, or get your hands on a multimeter, put it on ohms and measure the resistance to ground on the - side of the coil with the ign off and the points open circuit.

Sports 850's idea of a switch in behind the dash is possible, but it really should of been wired to open circuit the 12v to the + side of the ign coil, you still have 12v there so it could have been wired to supply a Number 5 is Alive Movie to the - side of the coil, which would eventually burn out the primary winding of the coil if left closed for any period of time with the ign on.

Do you have a Tacho? The signal feed for some tacho's (usually a green wire) comes from the - side of the coil. Has this wire come off behind your dash and is now resting on the body of the car supplying a Number 5 is Alive Movie on the - side of the coil??
