[quote="sports850"] Now you see why I didn't write it out myself , there's all the little things you do automatically but miss when you write it all out .[quote]
I'll see if I can remember to list all the steps when I pull out the engine in a month or so. The we'll have a how to - specifically for a Clubman but can be adapated for a Roundy.

Here's my 2 cents worth.........before removing the bonnet, mark where the edges of the hinges are. That way, the bonnet will go back in the same position when the job's finished :)

Do you need to drain the oil from the sump at all? Or will it stay in the sump once the engine is lifted out? The rusted out engine I'm taking out (this week) looks like it has the sump plug well & truly stripped and refuses to budge. If I DO need to drain the oil, I'm seriously contemplating drilling a hole in the side of the sump to do it.

Don't drill a hole, someone might want that part.
If you leave the inner cv cups in the gearbox you can leave the oil in.
It is possible to get the driveshafts out of the inner cv cups without dealing with the suspension but it's a hassle to put back.

Take things off until you get to here

Put everything (bolts, brackets etc) in sandwich bags and white clearly on them and MOST importantly take lots of photos so you know how bits go back together! :) Get a book and we had a really good DVD by by bill sollis I think on step by step building a motor and gear box, it was really handy having something to watch.

Good luck

Go out and buy yourself a good quality scissor type ball joint splitter. Your going to need it to refit the pot joints or is it to remove them ??

Either way its needed.

Again - put the front of the car up on jack stands - nothing else - and give the whole car a shake before attempt to undo anything - including wheels. If it falls off the jack stands while you are underneath it WILL kill you. So make sure its not going to fall by shaking it before you get under it.

I split the bottom ball joints and pulled the hubs back to release them from the inner pots. Balls still went everywhere but wasn't too bad. I seems I had much better chance of removing the extractors after un-doing the top engine mounts (bottom still connected) and rocking the donk forward after un-doing all manifold nuts.

Any advice on the rod change box rolled pin? Took me half a day to remove! Smashing it with a drift in an upwards direction would then foul the diff housing???tried all manner of gears and neutral??? ended up cutting the upwards protrusion with a dremel cut of disc and kept pushing it up till it came out... had me fully stumped?

Doing whilst in reverse gear normally gives enough clearance to push it out with a pin punch of the right size. Hitting the pin itself just flares the end and makes it more difficult to get out.
