I've just had quite a battle with a 1275 flywheel that had welded itself to the crankshaft taper. It came in the end (quite softly) with a 20 ton hydraulic puller. I always bolt a row of heavy penny washers around the bellhousing bolts, the flywheel can't go anywhere that way.

"""Hydraulic puller""

:-)

I used to borrow a Churchill Hydraulic puller off my mate. But I moved away and now the puller is 250km away.
I think that there would be one nearby that I could borrow if I need it, the retired service manager from the old Goulburn BMC/Leyland dealer lives nearby and he has all the special tools! :D
I just use a normal threaded puller and it works even though it needs a lot more effort to work. But using the heat gun on the flywheel hub seems to make the threaded puller work as good as a hydraulic puller. :D

Another reason for not hitting a puller/flywheel/crank with a hammer is the damage that it does to the thrust bearings.

Hydraulic pullers are the bees knees. I have access to 2 which makes life so very easy indeed.

I have always wanted to build this puller, but have never got around to it as i also have the factory churchill puller (paid $20.00 for it from an old BMC mechanic who brought it when he did his apprentship and i got talking to him and he was moving to an retirement home so wanted to go to some one who would use it, that would be 25 years ago) and Its never leaves my workshop unless its in my tool box.
