Trying to compile some info on boring a 998.

1. How big can i go? (safely as its going to be used for hard race work)

2. Are the parts easy to come by? (pistons, valve springs, new keepers, new pushrods, rocker arms, camshaft, lifters, oil pump, timing set, cam bearings etc)

3. Is there anything i should be aware of when boring out a 998 that is different to the usual? (usual to me being old holden 202)

all the parts you will need are "real" easy to come by.

As far as a rebore is concerned your limiting factor is being able to find pistons.

100 thou over are the biggest "standard" Mini pistons you can get. Graham Russell sells em.

Since you are racing it I would stop at 100 thou for reliabiltys sake.

On a side note Matt Reid went 200 tho over and used bike pistons on a recent hand grenade he put together.

An 1100 crank would be a good idea at the same time.

I think it would make your motor about an 1152cc I think, and if you're real serious you could pocket the block and use a 1275 head but probably not necessary.

There is a wealth of info on "big" 998 and 1100 Minis as many of the users on here are big fans on of the motors, maybe a search? (Although the search function is pretty useless on here, but sometimes can pull some good info).

998 with a 1100 crank and 80thou o/s makes it a 1215cc

This will probably be limited by the racing class you want to run in, check the rules before you start.

Nope sorry, it's just not that big with +.080" ones. It's 1166cc.

+.100" GR or Hypatec pistons with an 1100 crank gets you 1188cc.

To get 1215cc takes a 68.0mm bore (Imp pistons or similar) and a 1098 crank. Hard to get GOOD Imp pistons now.

If boring a 998 with its std 76.2mm stroke crank, you can get +.120" pistons (1095cc) from http://www.minisport.com.au/prod1094.htm - but don't expect more power than with +.100" ones (1062cc) as cylinder walls are getting a bit thin.

Thanks for the replies guys! Loads of knowledge in these here forums, I'll be full of questions in a few months time. Anyone reading running a "big" 998?

Might be easier than i thought to lay hands on pistons - I drive past MiniSport twice daily to and from work :D

Adding an 1100 crank was mentioned a few times, are they expensive/hard to find?

albino235: Thanks for the heads up, though running two engines puts me in a class of my own.

Once again, thanks for you help, advice and wisdom.

-Matt
