Are they supposed to be screwed between the body and the headlight bucket?
Not the headlight retaining screw? Wouldnt that move them back?

Can you remove the chrome retaining ring and sit the clip under the rim and then sit the rim backover it so only the bit that attaches to the mesh is showing???

Same process as fitting eyelids, or headlight peaks???

Nah, something is not quite right there, they should be sitting a lot closer to the headlight, maybe try and sit the clips closer to the base of the chrome retaining ring ie; sit the bottom of the clip closer to the headlight bucket maybe and see how that looks, ( the base of the clip doesn't sit under the bucket does it ? The one's i have on mine are the sort that you take the retaining ring off and push the gaurd over the headlight then put the ring back on.

they sure as hell ain't for a mini. looks like someone got a chip scoop and found some clips.
Here are some pics of a pair of genuine ones. the mesh has it's own surround and is hinged on the headlight rim. The original BMC ones were stainless steel. There were some aftermarket one that were chromed. EH holdens had similar but the headlight rim was different where it mounted.

I just got an email from the supplier and he thinks that they have been supplied with the wrong clips, now that would answer a lot of questions.

Mick called in on the way to the Geelong Dinner, and he agrees with me that the clips are not the right ones, they can be modified to fit, but you shouldn't really have to do that.

I will percevere because it is the right thing to do, so will keep all interested parties informed.

these are the way the new style headlight mesh thingys are made - fair few minis have them on, but the original style look better. Mine are originals, but don't hinge, I'd like some hinged ones...

well there you go Simon I have never seen that type before only the ones that I took pics of.
I know these are geniune BMC ones as they still had part sticker on them[very faded] There were two sets in the parts I got. One for the moke and one to sell and another set on one of the cars.
Mind you I think a small stone could still go thru and do some damage

With the advice from Mick last night, I attacked the clips with a pair of tin snips and drilled another hole and fitted them in the correct way, so I think they look a lot better now.

That last photos reminds me of one that used to go around about why not to take photos of stuff to sell on ebay in your undies.
