(well, a bit)

it's only 1cc or so. No big deal.
I did one in the car, once... 8)

Just tape all the holes up on top of block, put some grease around top of bore when finished, turn motor over. Presto! crud sticks in grease, wipe it out. Repeat until clean. :D

is that beacuse there is a bigger gap in between the middle two cylinders on 998 compared with 1275?

Sort of partly the reason- it's that 1275 bores are not only spaced differently, bores are much bigger. So, the exhaust valves on a 1275 head overhang the bores on a 850-998-1098.
Inlets clear- just!
`Pocketing the block' involves grinding or milling the deck away along the gasket line of a 998 gasket (exhaust valve side), approx 2.5mm deep.

Full instructions are in Des Hammill's book- `How to power tune the BMC/BL/Rover 998 A series engine'.
Around $40 from Pitstop Bookshop, at www.pitstop.net.au

Am I correct in saying that you just follow the lones of a 1275 gasket to pocket the block for a 940 head 8)

No- you follow the lines of a 998 gasket. But you MUST fit a 1275 gasket with a 1275 head- the 998 one won't seal the chambers.

when i get kezjims old manifold and turbo, its gunna be bolted strait onto my 1098,get all the stuff made for the rest of it,and keep it at low boost, and just boost very quietly to work and back (under 1Km from my house) and sort out some bugs untill i get around to the 1310 with same turbo,im going for all low down response
drag ya some time :D
