There was a yellow roundie electric van in Adelaide. It had plywood where headlights should be (Lack of electricity?) and a vent in the roof, possibly to let the explosive hydrogen out.

Last i saw it about 12 years ago.

I remember seeing that one! Last saw it at Minis at the mill aaaages ago - I think it ended up going to Blair Athol and was for sale for a while? but it is long gone now - whilst my memory is sketchy, I remember seeing it and thinking to myself "someone broke into a substation 50 years ago to build this" - it was a pretty agricultural build.

...and CHECK OUT THE SIZE OF THAT MOTOR! Overkill much?!! But it would be interesting to know how he has connected the motor to the wheels - it's a bit trickier in a mini as you can't just remove the engine, make an adaptor plate and plonk the motor on the end of the gearbox shaft as in these examples: http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/stor ... 82,00.html

Do a google search for electric cars and you'll be surprised what is available.
There is a guy in melbourne who "gets" a Hyundai Getz, rips out the motor & running gear and adds a battery pack & motor. It does upto 100 kph and about 120 klms range for $2 per charge. (foggy memory since I last looked.) He is having trouble keeping up with demand.
In WA there is a whole mob of enthusiasts & workshops doing this. I've seen on the mitchell hwy a 1960's mustang that is electric going past (has signs on it with advertising about the engine & user group)

A mini would be perfect if you didn't want to the backseat & boot area, which would be used for battery storage.

Performance can be amazing in these things though. Electric motors make a large torque figure all the way to maximum rpm. Normally a gearbox is not required or a only hi gear for 60+ speed if a lower final drive gear is used.
Also, systems like cooling/radiators, fuel, tranmissions can be removed. Saving weight and maintenance but also give back room to use in motor size, batteries, etc.

Now if I can only find a solid mini body without rust. I think it is easier to win lotto......
