Aaaaaahhhhhh Crazy lil car  Timing is spot on, everything looks right but she wont hold a steady idol an keeps 'running on' when she is switched off.Is this a carby issue or something else? Any one got any ideas as to why this is happening??
PWEEZE :D

I know you said the timing is spot on, but it sounds like the timing is out

Running on is often caused by too-high compression for the grade of fuel you're using, or when the car is running too hot (either too lean air/fuel mix or timing too far advanced).

How's the temperature? When I first installed my 123 electronic dizzy I static timed it wrong and gave it about 10º too much advance, and it ran like a pig and very nearly overheated driving 500m down the road.

When you say it won't idle steadily, can you get the revs down or does it want to race? If the latter, you've got a vacuum leak somewhere (which will lean the mix out and give it a tendency to run on too).

5c to think about ;)

Air leak somewhere around the manifold, throttle shaft?
Like Tombo said check the dashpot and piston for excess crap.
Whats the timing been set at?

Ive set the static timing to the 1/4 mark on the flywheel before running and have strobed it since then and set the timing at around3-5 degBTDC @600rpm(around about, bit hard to get it spot on when it idles all over the place).I put the timing light away and did it by ear, turned the dizzy till the revs came up and it idled better but higher then started to run hot so i put the dizzy back to where it was
Im running normal ulp with (valve saver)and the block has been decked and head shaved but i dont think that would boost the comp too much(perhaps some high octane stuff nxt time)She idles all over the place as in 600rpm to 1000rpm each time you push the go pedal but eventually settles to a very rough 750ish rpm, im thinking carby as im pretty sure everything else is good and she did have a very erratic idol when i first got her,the carb does have a bit of play in the butterfly.
Yes i am a mechanic but due to incidents beyond my control i have trouble with my long term memory, new car stuff no worries, old car stuff has all been fragmented, hence why im on here soundin like a noob

Mine likes premium lots more than 91 octane, on that stuff mine is horrible to drive and pings like mad, but then I have somewhere around 10:1 compression so that's to be expected.

Do you have a standard cam? 600 rpm is pretty low, I almost never set my cars up to idle that low. I go for 800 rpm with a standard cam or 1000 or above if it's is warm.

Is there play in the throttle shaft (laterally) or in the butterfly (axially)? Axial play in the butterfly (looking at it face on, side to side in the carb throat) won't really hurt you, but lateral play in the throttle shaft means you have an air leak which will give you erratic idle.

1st get rid of the 91 fuel and put some 98 fuel in and set the timing to 10degree before tdc (between 5 and 10),
Did you replace the timing chain? If so is it a single or double row type?
Did you get the cam modified?
Is it a standard inlet exhaust manifold in one as I have seen these warp/bow and not seal even with a new gasket and tightend up as much as possiblebefore the thread on the manifold nuts gives up.
Get the carbie cleaner out and spray around the throttle shaft on both sides, manifold and carb gasket and manifold to head gasket when running and warm and listen if the idle smooths out/come good.

Hi Max.
My LS had something same (maby)and the trouble was getting the hoseee things at the carby rite, becose of the extra hoseeee things for poo-loo-tion gear to charcole and breathers ect..the exact order may be critical.
the above infomation may not be the exact answer but maby it can be looked at.

I was running my Alfa on normal unleaded for a few weeks and it started running a bit rough then running on so made the change to premium and made it heaps better to drive.
Is there nice thin oil in the top of the SU?? My old Mini wasn't running too well first then put some thinner oil it the pot and idled and ran much better.

Put some nice Tranny oil in the top ov the carb and set the timing at 10DBTDC an has seemed to put her in a fractionally better mood (rough idle but constant idle)
 They run better when you put the bloody big spring back in the top of the carby
