Hi guys
I was tossing :o up the idea of putting a 1000cc or 1200cc jap bike muffler on the mini. I would maybe bolt it cross ways between the rear subframe and the beaver panel. If I just ran a straight pipe with a 90 deg mandrel bend at the end, it would be simple enough and it would look pretty sweet, bit ricerish but wtf its my car. So the question I am asking is will it run or sound like crap?

Cheers in advance Michael

Your biggest problem might be that bikes have to meet different sound rules then cars , I think bikes can be louder than cars so you may have problems keeping the roar to a legal level . This is coming from someone who used to run a 1310 with a single 8" long hot dog for an exhaust though , man it used to sound good , especially at 3000rpm , it'd build up to a trumpet nlast at 3000 ....

the laws may be a little tighter, but we dont have roadworthys. If I can keep of the loud pedal around the cops and dont get defected and sent to regency(inspection place) I should be ok

998, 1098 or 1275? how hot/warm is the tuning?

Bike muffler and good straight throughs are no different as far as I can see. The one with the least restriction will work best. If you have to mount it at right angles, i can't see how that is better than say a centre exhaust straight through pipe and muffler.

Bigger is not necessarily better, remember that gas flows faster through smaller spaces. A huge exaust sytem will lose you torque if it is too big.

A standard issue 1 3/4" pipe and RC40 straight through system will work well for many applications, and as they are quite "standard" they may be cheaper than a custom bike setup ($140 for the muffler and $20 for the pipe from Karcraft for instance)

What type of exhaust manifold do you have? this would be the area of greatest restriction on std setups

It has been done to minis all over the world..... and yes, you will probably want to fit a "hotdog" muffler aswell to help keep the noise down a bit. Doesnt really improve performance, just looks a bit different. Carbonfibre mufflers would look best.

Heres mine..... its from a BMW R1100S, stainless steel with chrome face plates... and cost a huge $65 (including postage) 8) ...................................ebay

And yes, ground clearance is an issue..... the box is physically under the subframe cross bar.

What sort of sound levels are people getting with the bikes?
Under the old 100dba level ?

Yes and no.

The laws are different. They are tighter is some areas and looser in others. For example, your not allowed to (not supposed to) change the induction system (within reason of course) on a post 75 or whatever car due to emmission laws. But you can install an engine of any size and power to any car as long as an approved chartered professional engineer deems it to be safe and you give him a alarge sum of money! :P

In mini-dunger's case, if he doesn't attract the attention, he'll be right, :)

Another thing you have to consider is motorbike mufflers flow massive amounts of gas. Because a bike engine generally revs twice as high as a mini engine it has to flow somewhere around twice the gas. So I'm guessing a can from a 600cc bike would be ideal for most Minis.

 I've been thinking about it for a while.

Went into the local Suzuki shop today, but they reckoned they didn't have anything suitable, so I'm buying a slightly used system off a 650cc from the bloke standing next to me at the parts counter. Sorted! :D
