I have finished my rebuild and started her up today.

A problem I've had in the past and even now after the rebuild is that when I first start the engine, I find it impossible to open the throttle up. When I do the engine revs don't change at all, sometimes it stalls and when I put even more throttle the carby backfires.
When the engine is running at it's normal temp everything is fine.
Carby is a HIF44. Before the rebuild I had a mechanical fuel pump, now I am using a Fedtro pump.

Of course I am only applying a little bit of throttle but it still just doesn't seem right.

Is this a carby problem? Does it need a rebuild?

Sounds like it`s in perfect tune to me

but.... does it do that same thing if you try to rev it with the choke on (when it`s cold that is) ???

SU carbs (when in good tune) don`t like starting ,,, or running very well,,, when they`re cold,,, if they do then they`re set too rich

Soooo,,,, if it coughs & splutters when it`s cold "Without" the choke on,,,, but it`s all good when it`s warm..... then it sounds perfect to me

But that`s just me,,, others may know better,,, lets get their storys/thoughts/ideas/experience too & you can make an Informed judgment

Mine is similar....When its cold it will splutter and cough back into carby. If I apply choke it runs okay and once nice and warm it runs really well.

At first I thought I had a problem so I changed plugs, checked timing, topped up dash pot oil etc and it did improve but still doesn't like running under load when its cold. I am still thinking of doing a carby reco to ensure everything is right with the SU but apart from that I think patience in the morning will fix my problem.

It is very true what Matt is saying. Mini Engines with SUs don't like to run too well when cold unless the choke is used. Choke needs to be left on till engine starts to run a bit Rich and ruogh then slowly eased off. If engine runs well when it is warm it is a sign thet the Carb is fine. Don't touch it ! Be a bit more patient with it when cold and give it time to warm up. Running engines flat out before they warm up does not do them much good.

Mine doesn't backfire through the carbs, but you've little chance of starting it without the choke at all. Once it's running it'll fart around a bit being too rich, but if I back the choke off to just over the fast idle setting it runs fine.

If I try to go without choke too soon it complains bitterly, but once the temperature needle starts to move it's usually OK.

If it starts and runs well cold without choke, it's too rich.

Sounds normal then. It does idle fine, the reason for asking is since it's a new rebuild engine with a new cam, I was trying to not let the cam idle. Is there a way around this?

Hmm interesting, after recently fixing my dizzy, my carbs no longer require choke in the morning. (But its a lot warmer of a morning atm)
So hypothetically if the carbies are now too rich, how long would I need to run the car for before the spark plugs will show signs of blackening aka proof its too rich?

Depends what sort of driving you do, but usually not very long -- I find my plugs will change colour with half an hour or so of running after a tweak or change of fuel brand.

Mine won't fire up unless the throttle is left shut or near shut, then has a bit of a carry on and starts to cheer up.

Dean Hutton's first car was a Mini.

Water heated manifold , Grill Muff , correct timing , tappet gaps reset - good idle under choke , 45 sec till revs rise , reduce to 1/3rd choke and drive off, as soon as the temperature gauge crosses the bottom line choke fully in.

Well that was the routine in the "Snail" !
