Thats what I kept trying to tell everyone who kept asking me to write a how to for 2K.... AINT GANA HAPPEN...

The stuff is leathal. And if it doesn't harm you, it will harm someone else... you kids, your partner, your neighbors (no matter how much you might ""think"" the desrve it, its a pretty rotten way to go)... or even your pets.

Please people. I'm not just having another Phat Kat moment, this stuff kills and with in the decade it will be outlawed, mark my words.

EDIT> its funny reading how the guy tried using a canester filter (well funny isn't the right word)... AIR FED FACE SHELD IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL SAVE YOU... there are NO filters that will stand up to the task, they will only stop the "'chunky"" bits and ""some"" of the vapours... all the bad stuff goes right thru them.

Bad stuff.

I heard long ago how bad it is and have seen the safety gear the tradies use, i don't have that gear. And really, my acrylic might be a bit softer but the finish is brilliant 8) Better than you'd get from most crash repairers.

Is there a better alternative (other than acrylic\enamel)?

Yeah, they have already come out with water based enamels... only problem is that you can only use it for base coats, you still need to use 2k clear over it,, so its half way there. There is a really big push in Europe to get it (2k) outlawed, so thats where all the technology is coming from.

As of 31/12/2008 all new vehicles manufactured in Australia must use water based colour. The only reason it hasn't passed down to panel shops yet is cos its still too dear.. there are probably 2 or 3 places in sydney that have started using it. Its not cheap though, about one and a half to twice the price of 2k. So in a couple of years when the price drops a bit they will probably change the law so that you have to use it.

They are still working on a clear to replace the 2k system, but they will probably have something in the next 10 years or less.

Incase anyone is worried or wondering, Acrylic (1k), isn't 15% as dangerous as 2k. You can safely use it with a class A1 filtter, (or with out if your painting ourside but wouldn't really recomend it). The only reason it isn't still used is

1) 2k is a harder more durable finish that stands up to UV better than acrylic

2) 2k is quicker to use, because it is glossy off the gun

Those are the main reasons. Micowen or someone else might be able to add a few, but if your painting at home ACRYLIC.

The clear coat is by far the worst of all the "coats" for the ISO's etc, just shame they haven't developed a water based clear yet.

A lot of shops are starting to change to waterbase base coats - the bigger shops are changing asap as once they use their existing stock their converting over to waterbase.

Will be interesting to see what the smaller shops do as to spray the waterbase you need a different gun etc.

Also the ISO's in 2k can not only get you from inhaling them but also through your eyes or hands if you're not wearing the correct saftey gear...

I spray 2K all day long at work, but have never even attempted to spray it at home.
I have joked about it before on here, (my mistake, and I was rightly put in my place, as it is something not to be taken lightly!!), but the truth be told, per year, I would be lucky to spray a litre of acrylic at home.
Apart from the obvious, that the wife doesnt like it, for some reason it just doesnt feel right to spray it.
I cannot use the full airconditioned, motorbike racing quick tearoff deluxe models that I would love to use with my spray painting, as it just wouldnt work, as I will attempt to show in a couple of pictures.

The white rear wall has to be painted while balancing awkwardly on a ladder perched between the wall and turntable.(very tricky and hard to do!)
Image

Everything underneath has to be sprayed as well! The picture was taken from above, but to paint underneath is very messy, time consuming, and has to be done from a layboard. (once again, very tricky, and hard to do!)

Image

The vortex created while spraying from underneath is crazy!
Image

What I'm trying to get at here in these pictures is that a tearaway visor would last 2 seconds spraying the jobs that I do, and would cause a humpty dumpty for me while perched up 3 meters on the top of a ladder blasting away with a pressure pot!
Just to add a note, I do some painting where I can wear the best gear, and am currently trying to acquire it!
Smearing the face with vasoline, barrier cream, etc, etc, does help, but not the solution. The sooner they can completley ban 2K the better in my opinion!

Nice pics micowen 8)

I was wondering if you guys might use Pressure Pot set ups, it would make it a hell of a lot easier. I've got a little 2 litre one that I use on some jobs (or parts of jobs). If the bugger wasn't so damn hard to clean I'd use it on everything!

Thats a nice sized spray booth.... :!:

The major problem is every bug in creation wants to come and dip its feet in your new wet paint.
I did my 850 in Castrol Green spray enamel back in 1968, it looked a million bucks! 8)

Yes, correct - but if you keep them out, it can look fantastic!
