ball bearings are a different story, they need their races to be held in place from both sides.

in any case, the nut is designed so that if the split pin breaks it will just overtighten itself (left hand thread on the left side), but the split pin is just to stop tightening from vibration combined with the influence of the direction the wheel is turning, theres no torsional load on it.. if it breaks you already had problems.

I'm with you (as an experienced fitter/onetime VW/Formula Vee mechanic). I'm fitting 2 rear Unipart Timken kits to mine today,we'll see how tight they are when assembled. I won't be putting any shims in... I'll back the nut off if needed.

Well i fitted them and they were too tight for my liking before the nut was anywhere near torque so i backed it up and pinned it. Nice and quiet now :D

Interestingly (and probably not surprisingly) now that my bearings have done a few hundred miles and are run in, they needed the shims taken out... :roll:

All torqued up and they feel perfect now..
