The usual pissing contest as to which fuel is better, shell optimax and BP Ultimate are all blended to the same recipie at the same place in Sydney - there is no diff between the two of them apart from the pump colour and the dye used in both(absolutely none!)- I like yellow personally but I get petrol from either. I hated BP up until recently when they were the only place selling a hi octane ULP - I must admit it is ok

Rob if it's the same as Optimax how come NZ gets it sent all the way from Kwinana, WA?
See http://www.bp.co.nz/about/env_fuelsqa.html#eight
It was previously stated by BP that it ALL came from there, ours too. They said it was low sulphur and could not be made here.
Similarly Mobil 8000 is/was sourced from Victoria.

Noted Doc but both distributors here in ACT admit to the same thing - now I wouldnt believe it if it only came from one of them - but both??

Bit of petrol hedging going on me thinks - they are all crooks anyway, bloody OPEC

PS - as stated in a previous post last year, working with BP is like working with Satan. However after the shortage of shell yet again in the ACT had to use the BP - pleasantly suprised(doesnt stain as bad when you spill it on the duco either!!)

Wellll... all I can say is, my red car (10.4:1 C/R) ran great on Ultimate or Mobil 8000, but up to crap on Optimax!
Maybe our petrol is better than your petrol... :P

Smokie my Head bloke had flash lube analized and the results returned two stroke oil with addatives so your two stroke oil will lubricate the cylinder head how well god only knows but it will work.

BP and Shell does come from the same source with different additives introduced in the tanker.

After saying that I still won't use anything other than BP ultimate as it seems to run best in my cars.

Yeppers doc - but your fuel is at least reliable in supply - the peanuts here cant even assure supply from 1 week to the next and at $1.26(!!!) a litre my patience is wearing thin

No worries jill! The larger bottles do have markers on them, but i found that the bottle i have only has 50ml increments, useless for a mini and you have to pour it in, not squirt. refilling the smaller bottles is just more convenient!

CPOCSM, $1.26? thats f'ing ridiculous! i hope that's for premium, not for regular ULP!

When i was at uni in ballarat, i always went to shell. it was invariably 1 or 2 cents cheaper than BP, and BP didn't have LRP (which is a piece of crap anyway, stay away from it!). then i went to optimax and performance and economy significantly improved!!! Then i decided to give BP Ultimate a go (the advertising got to me!) and found it improved both economy and performance further, so i stayed on that.

I did hear a rumour ( :?: ) that optimax and ultimate come from the same source, but ultimate does seem to run better...i suppose it just comes down to individual preference. 8)

LRP contains additives that make it burn in a different way. these additives are bad for your engine. i read it in street machine magazine a little while ago. i cant remember all the ins and outs of the artcle, but basically STAY AWAY FROM LRP! sure, premium unleaded is more expensive by the itre and on top of that you ahve to pay for the flash lube, but it does last longer, balancing out it's higher cost, and even if it does wind up being dearer, surely a healthier engine justifies spending the extra dollars???

I am a little late in the piece, but another fuel question...

I drive Mo say once or twice a week (making sure that he is properly warmed up when I drive him) and someone was saying to me that fuel goes off. If lets say I have half a tank of fuel in the car for say 4 weeks, does this fuel "go off" and what damage am I doing to the engine with this off fuel..? By not driving it, is there any way around this..?

Another question... by not driving around, does the fuel condensate and am I getting water in the engine..? Is there any way around this either..?

nahh, it takes longer than that for fuel to go off, and with
the way you drive, imm sure you get enough going through the motor
to put new petrol in your car at the end of the week, or
at least a top up....petrol wont go off in two weeks

There is a lot more aromatics (solvents) in `petrol' now, it does evaporate faster than it used to.
I parked Ha-Ha for 6 weeks while if did the motor- when I ran it again it pinged a little. Topped it up (was 1/2 full) with Mobil 8000, & no more ping. 8)

if we have these solvents added to fuel, and they are supposed to help the running,

what is the content of a good fuel?
100% Octane
95% Octane + solvents
etc?

i always thought it was pure octane (with flashlube of course)

Until recently there was no legal definition of `petrol', which allowed villains to cut it with Toluene, paint thinners etc to avoid excise.

They have now put excise on these things and then given the paint manufacturers exemptions. I believe.
