There are still afew 1 7/8 tow-balls and trailers around. A mate has a 1 7/8 ball on his ancient trailer. He forgot to change the ball once when he borrwoed my car trailer. The (fortunately empty) trailer jumped off on a bump and punched a neat hole in his rear bumper.

Cheers,

exciting stuff aye, i had a similar event with my fathers boat  came off on a bump and carved into the bitumn.. hmmmm gotta love those safety chains...

Speaking of safety chains, it is a very good idea to attach the safety chains to the towbar itself and not just to the tongue. If a weld breaks or the bolts come loose on a removable tongue you could have a disaster.
If you attach the chains securely to a separate spot you can increase your safety margin.

Also make them short enough (cross two chains under the bar) to hold the trailer off the ground in the event
of the trailer becoming disconnected.
But still long enough to negotiate tight turns.

Started measuring up for mine today.

Can anyone tell me what distance I should be aiming for between the ball and the bumper?

high enough that the doors just open and high enough that it doesent hit the ground. Im also in the process of lifting the car up at the back, to get more clearance for heavier traliers I have.
