I was able to connect a smiths tacho I bought straight up to my 78 and 73 clubmans using the two white wires as 1310/71 (I think) described I also had to hook up power and earth as well but that is to be expected. I was only putting it in the 78 to see that the tacho worked so there was no special wiring.

The two white wires come from the ignition and don't connect up into the loom that goes to the other dash instruments. Both of my clubbies have had the appropriate wires. 8) I am pretty sure both were designed with a two pod dash in mind (it's a bit hard to tell with one of them it's been heavily modified and I don't think the wiring is very standard anymore  )

My loom is 100% standard. I will check it out, as I need to reconnect all my gauges and switches very sooooooon

i know my 3 clock speedo is not standard which is what confuses me. when i had it out the other day the wire that connects to the tacho had been put in by someone and it just connected to the coil. but then i saw another wire which was part of the wiring up to the speedo and it had the same clip as the tacho i dicided to try it and it worked perfectly. so i removed the wire that had been put in (the one to the coil) an put the speedo back in using the wire off the wiring harness. what confuses me is that my clubman is juat a basic one and didnt come with a 3 clock so maybe all the wiring was the same in all clubmans :?

Red line gives tacho power, blue backing stuff earths the tacho where the red dot is and green line goes to -ve of the coil... helpful or have I misread the thread?!
