Basic Aus fuel is basically toluene (paint thinners:). There are legislated min and max percentages basically because of the effect it has on fuel lines/rubber components. Too little and they go brittle, too much and they go soggy. Either way you risk fires. Don't know if anyone remembers the incident where one tanker load of high T fuel from Singapore caused a rash of under bonnet fires in NZ a few years ago.. :(

Benzene is an excellent octane enhancer - unfortunately its not so good on the human body; alcohol works well too.

Cheers, Ian

This explains why my fuel disappears without driving the car... damned evaporation from the vented tanks.

Last tow to Hay i tried the Wynns octane booster in my Outback. The Outback has poor economy on unleaded and very good economy on PULP when towing. The booster with 98 PULP was no better than unleaded. It may have been a dud batch of PULP and the additive possibly made no difference.

Either way, i got it free and i won't ever buy any.

acetone can't be good for the lines

does anyone get the feeling these products may work in theory by lifting the octane rating on paper, but really hinder the burning of the fuel in the chamber due to separation of the mixture via different burning, atomizing & flash point?

does the "normal" fuel ignite & then set off the additives resulting in a longer burn due to a higher igniting temp?(probably not as the spark would be hotter). how does the "after burn" compare in release of energy?

From some what I've been reading people often can't notice the difference, or if they can is often 50/50 good or bad. Just seems odd so many people can't notice the difference. Perhaps peoples time & money is better spent trying to achieve a better fuel atomization using parts over additives?

end of rant

& then there`s the Specific Density of each of the different fuel (s)

:-)

Yes. :D
It helps to know what the fuel is before you start chucking things in to "improve" it.

I've used octane booster. It made a difference. :o When you don't use a vehicle very often, given we all know that the octane additives are the first things to evaporate, it can mean the difference between running sweetly or pinging... That's from experience - I ran the car one day, it pinged. I put in octane booster, rocked the car about a bit to mix it, went for a drive and the pinging had stopped. I'm guessing it did just enough. I wouldn't (and don't) use it on fresh fuel, though. I think it's better thought of as 'fuel refresher'. :)
