Just thought i'd post an update on my progress.
As i mentioned in a previous post, i grabbed an 80's Barina (Suzuki Swift) alternator. See picture below.
It's a 50A Nippon Denso unit.
The Suzuki part number number is ... 31400-82611
The Nippon Denso part number is ... 100211-1411
The benefit of this alternator over the one in the original post is the steel bracket that is bolted to the back of it. It should save your water pump housing from excessive stress.
I had to machine about 4.5mm off the mounting face with a mill. I had my friend Sam help me with this.
Then Sam machined up a nice 20mm long x 22mm dia. spacer from some aluminium to allow the back bracket to be bolted to the original one bolted to the block.
Here is a photo of the Barina (Swift) alternator test fitted and bolted in place.

NOW... following my visit to Sam, his attention has been drawn to all things alternator related. He subsequently has come across some brand spanking new 50A Japanese made alternators. They are almost identical dimensions to the Nippon Denso unit in diameter but are a little bit longer. This is actually quite beneficial because it means that no spacer is required for the back bracket!!! It also comes with a v-belt pulley and the offset for the mounting brackets are identical to the ND alternator i took from the Barina.
Here is an unmodified one fitted to my mini...
How badass does it look compared to the other ones.
These ones are an industrial grade Mitsubishi item and are therefore of a much higher quality to your normal automotive units. They retail for over $300!
Sam can only get his hands on 5 of them. I am going to take one, which leaves 4 more that he's planning to modify and sell as a kit for fitment to minis. From what i understand at this stage the kit will consist of the brand new alternator with custom machining done to the bracket, new bolts and wiring harness plugs that fit in the back. It will also include one of the awesome tensioner brackets from a Mitsubishi magna.
I'm not sure exactly on the price but i think he said approximately $220 because he can get these 5 for less than cost price and will do the additional mods for cheap.
