Hmmm, I was struggling to fit an oil cooler in the Moke on the weekend. I was thinking a smaller alternator would create some space. Now I know what to look for. :)

Cheers,

I recently completed this conversion on my Auto Moke. Thanks again to the Ausmini community for posting up the details. :)

For the benefit of those that follow, the Bosch part number 11A0800 (800mm long) fan belt is a perfect fit. It was used on various 80's Audi's, BMW's and some Series 4 RX7 Turbos.

Cheers,

Really need to use an original bracket that bolts to to block and run apeice of pipe to the back of the water pump bracket and run a bolt through the whole lot otherwise the aluminium water pump bracket breaks off after time due to viabration been there done that. good conversion otherwise.

For sure, the water pump casting is a fragile looking thing. Just compare it to
the mount on the alternator.
And I would imagine the bottom bracket would flex and vibrate a fair bit.
Looks very neat. The modern alternators with the internal fan look so nice.

I went to the wreckers today and picked up a tiny alternator from a 1.0L 3cyl Charade. It was a 1994 model. I assume this is the correct one?

I am at a loss as to how you guys made it fit with only machinine 5mm off the mounting face. Also, how did you manage to fit the pulley without modification? The Nippondenso pulley is grooved and also doesn't have a keyway like the Lucas one.

My estimation is there is about 15mm of machining required to make the belt straight.

Clearly you guys made it work... Would it be possible to detail things a bit more, please?

Perhaps there's some variations in mini models? I have an MG Metro A+ motor in mine.

my daihatsu nd alternator had a v pulley already on it. I think it was from a 92/93 charade. I don't have access to any photos sorry.

Well that's really weird. The wrecker i went to had a bunch of Charades. 3 x 1.3L 4cyl models and 1 x 1.0L 3cyl one. There was also a 1.0L 3cyl Swift. From what i could tell, all had the ribbed belt. WTF is going on then?! :?

just different model charades - probably later model than the others have got them off.

I might have to go back and grab another one then. :(

Does this look like the right car?

1991 3cyl Suzuki Swift? http://www.jollysupullit.com.au/ezipart ... 1/89-01/91

If so... i'll go grab the alternator off it tomorrow.

This is the car i took my alternator from... http://www.jollysupullit.com.au/ezipart ... 8/94-03/96

Well, i went back to the wreckers one more time. I couldn't find any alternators with the v-belt that looked like the one in the original post. The one i grabbed initially looked like that, but had the wrong pulley.

Anyhow... I found a 1985(ish) Holden Barina. I took the alternator off that because it has better mounting points for the mini. It also has an additional bracket that supports the back end of the alternator so the water pump housing isn't under excessive stress.

In my opinion, relying on one mounting point to hold the alternator in place is simply poor engineering. The tensioner does nothing to help resist the twisting force that the tight belt puts on the alternator. The original alternator is mounted by two points, plus the tensioner. That is what i recommend and plan to do.

Yes, that is a good way to break the water pump or alternator mounting lug.

Just thought i'd post an update on my progress.

As i mentioned in a previous post, i grabbed an 80's Barina (Suzuki Swift) alternator. See picture below.

Image

It's a 50A Nippon Denso unit.
The Suzuki part number number is ... 31400-82611
The Nippon Denso part number is ... 100211-1411

Image

The benefit of this alternator over the one in the original post is the steel bracket that is bolted to the back of it. It should save your water pump housing from excessive stress.

I had to machine about 4.5mm off the mounting face with a mill. I had my friend Sam help me with this.

Image

Then Sam machined up a nice 20mm long x 22mm dia. spacer from some aluminium to allow the back bracket to be bolted to the original one bolted to the block.

Here is a photo of the Barina (Swift) alternator test fitted and bolted in place. 8)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOW... following my visit to Sam, his attention has been drawn to all things alternator related. He subsequently has come across some brand spanking new 50A Japanese made alternators. They are almost identical dimensions to the Nippon Denso unit in diameter but are a little bit longer. This is actually quite beneficial because it means that no spacer is required for the back bracket!!! It also comes with a v-belt pulley and the offset for the mounting brackets are identical to the ND alternator i took from the Barina.

Here is an unmodified one fitted to my mini...

How badass does it look compared to the other ones. 8) 8) 8)
These ones are an industrial grade Mitsubishi item and are therefore of a much higher quality to your normal automotive units. They retail for over $300!

Sam can only get his hands on 5 of them. I am going to take one, which leaves 4 more that he's planning to modify and sell as a kit for fitment to minis. From what i understand at this stage the kit will consist of the brand new alternator with custom machining done to the bracket, new bolts and wiring harness plugs that fit in the back. It will also include one of the awesome tensioner brackets from a Mitsubishi magna.

I'm not sure exactly on the price but i think he said approximately $220 because he can get these 5 for less than cost price and will do the additional mods for cheap.

Is anyone at all interested in the alternators? Is it worth modding a few?
