I am chasing a set of new tyres for my 10" Contessa's. I want to get Falken's. Does anyone know the best place to get these from and a rough cost per tyre.

I can't tell you the best place, sorry. Normally just ring around.

I used to pay about $80, but I think the price of all 10inch tyres has gone up. I have a feeling someone I was speaking to the other day said the cheapest they could find was $99.

Why are you choosing Falkens?

In my opinion they are dangerous. They are ok in the dry, but as soon as the road gets a little wet they are very slippery. However in saying that, they do last forever.

For an extra 20-30 bucks, you can get yoko a008's, they are a great tyre, and whilst they don't last as long, I feel there is no substitute for safety.

I'll be interested to see what the cheapest is too.

I've got a set of Falkens on the front at the moment (they just happened to be fitted to some mags I bought) they look fairly new and I was interested to see what they were like after lots of people saying how bad they were in the wet.

Is it possible they have improved the compound or something recently. I drove over the Blue Mountains this weekend in rain, snow and sleet and they seemed OK to me.

Check out the ice buildup on the front of the car!!

for a cheap road tyre i prefer the bridgestone sf226 to the falken, but if you dont drive too hard it wont matter too much.

i thought the a008's are bad in the wet due to their polka dot design.

I find A008s quite good in the wet, better than Bridgestones and far better than Falkens.
Rubber compound of the tyre is just as important for wet grip as tread pattern is. Go dig your fingernail into a Yoko, then try and do it to a Falken. Don't break your nail...

For an example, back in the 70s I used to run 13" Avons on the Fiat. Even when nearly bald they were far better in the wet than most other new tyres of the same size.
