Hi all,

Im having problems with my mini starting. It has a weber on it, and it used to start fine. However I changed the head gasket, now the starter disengages every time I try to fire it up. The guys at minisport said the weber causes this, my question is why and how do i stop it. I dont really want to put a $500 starter motor on the car as im just trying to get it registered so I can sell it.

Brendan

Possibly the ignition timing is a little less than optimum for starting, usually a little to far advanced. Where it is might be right for driving, but maybe not for starting.

After breaking teeth off 3 or 4 Lucas starter pinions with my modified 1360, I put a separate switch on the ignition circuit. I spin the starter up with ignition off, then throw the switch ON. Works for me...

[edit] You could fix your problem by replacing the starter with a pre-engaged one. A modified Holden Gemini one is available from Heritage MG parts which bolts straight into an early Mini (not Rovers). Cost ~$162.

You could go buy one S/H from a wrecker, but would need to slot the mounting holes to fit a Mini.

Yeah I did wonder about the timing...i'll try retarding it a little bit but if that doesnt work the gemini starter sounds pretty good.

Minis are awesome cars once you take all the british bits out of em.
