Actually, they did. They came from the UK with tags riveted on and then removed here and stamped

Yes I know, 'they' refers to the Australian 'they' not the parent 'they'.

The ones cast here at Zetland, didn't have the rivet holes as they never had tags fitted, only engine numbers stamped on. All UK Blocks, as far as I am aware, only ever had tags riveted on, no stamping (how do they deal with theft etc???)

Potentially the UK system is a little bit more secure than ours. Anyone here can weld and grind or deck the number off, then stamp a new one on. The UK system would require you to get a replacement plate. The plates are stamped from behind with raised letters, which isn't something the average mug can do. I believe there is only one place in the UK who stamps replacement plates and he requires copies of your registration paperwork to do them.

My Traveller still has its original plate.

They didn't cast any blocks in Australia. Zetland didn't have a foundry. The blocks were cast in England and the engines were assembled in Australia.
So they all have the two holes on each end of the engine number. (despite what GT Mowog says)

You can tell an imported motor from a local motor. The local motor has two empty holes. The imported motor has two holes with cut off rivets.

Interesting, I thought some were cast here. I'd better re-read TME.

There were. My former employer used to carry out maintenance to the foundry furnaces at Zetland BMC plant.

I believe some cranks and conrods were forged here (by ANI?), but no blocks cast.

Ok, I will bite, which ones were cast here?
Do you have a photo of one without the two holes?
What is the part number cast on the block?

And for an extra point, where were the P76 V8 blocks cast?

P76 6 cylinder blocks were cast here in Aus, they have mowog cast inside the outline of Australia on them,

P76 V8 Alloy blocks, prototype engines used castings from Birmal in the UK, production blocks were cast by Castalloy in Adelaide.

Most of the ones I have photos of don't have the stamp.

I bet when the stamp got blunt or broken it was not replaced.

Show the cast number on the back of the block.
(btw, you can see one of the filled in holes when you blow up the photo, and what is that mark before the first digit? Looks like a re-stamp job.)

I bet there was a few of these no hole blocks in the hundreds of blocks, cranks, heads, gearboxes etc that were recently scrapped by the current owner of NMP.

I bought 2 brand new short motors from BMC back in the 60s. A 997 and a 1275 (M1100S).
Neither had the 2 rivet holes, or a stamped number, (or the map of Oz either)
I did the right thing and got NSW Police numbers issued and stamped on.
