so just put a new gasket it on today & it's seeping slowly a bit of coolant out of one bolt.

what have I dont wrong? not enough gasket goo? i tried to do it nice & neat?

normally i just smear it on thick as hell.

anyways what's should i do.

A bit of poop stuck on the gasket face?

Or on the bolt?

Or maybe not 100% flat next to the bolt/stud?

There's a path from the thermostat to the stud, most likely only cured by getting it off and checking it all again...

what gasket is better the cork ones or the paper ones?

don't have any handy, but you would rate that over the normal gasket?

I prefer the paper gasket, the cork ones squeeze out.
I smear Loctite 515 on them. Better on an engine than using that silastic crap... it belongs on roof gutters.

I just use a roll of gasket paper and cut out the right shape, then use a little Permatex red silicone. I find the surfaces are all pitted after all this time, and the gaskets alone just won't seal.

Sometimes takes a couple of goes to get a seal, but I won't put up with a coolant leak there

yeh i had a corck one it split and over heated my car a while ago.

ill grab a paper one tomorrow & smear the crap out of it!!

Making your own is the way to go if you don't have any handy. And if you don't have any gasket paper around, you can always use your cereal box and just use a light smear or whatever goo you have to help with any pitting etc on the surfaces.

Those gaskets I am always happy to buy half a dozen when I just need one. The problems always strike on a public holiday...

You can get some really nice thick paper ones as well. I like these ones for some reason, they seem less inclined to problems as the super dooper thin paper types which come with the thermostat covers included in the bag.

When I've encountered this problem, the easiest fix is to put an 'o' ring on the stud between the housing and the flat washer.
2 mins to fix and no more leaks!

i think ill buy a new one tomorrow thin & get some nice thick gasket paper & cut my own out.

I like the o-ring idea. Some of these old heads will really give you the irrits. There's bugger all gap between the thermostat land and the stud.

I use Permatex Number 3 on the gasket and I coat it on the studs as well to prevent leaks and to prevent corrosion.
It will still come apart in 10 or 20 years without breaking the housing.
