Thanks Matt, what about the 'Top' notation?

Can you fit a piston backwards, would it make much difference?

I realise pistons aren't round, but i would have thought the oval was across the pin to help with thrust load?

Hmmmmnnn ?? :?

1275 pistons are symmetrical, 1098s are not- they have the gudgeon pin offset.
Sooooooo, watch which way round for these, but on a 1275 it don't matter.

This is one of my spare 9F/XE/Y Motors, bought condition unknown a while ago, the guy said the head had been 'done up' recently. The bores are good, no lip and the head is indeed a very servicable 12G1805 Mk2 S head.

I'm procrastinating about pulling the head on the original Engine in the Mk2, it blows smoke on start up, and I can see oil on top of the pistons. Hoping its just the head :?

But, once the head is off, who knows !

Short term fix would be to just swap the short motors if the bores turn out to be worn in the S. :x

Then theres the diff, a bit of play there too.....Grrrr Bl#ody Mini's

it's gotta be just the head, but as soon as you do the head up all the fresh compression will mean it'll blow past the rings
