The wire which doesn't go to the coil should be an earth.

Red is never an earth (even the dodgiest of backyard mechanics wouldn't be so cruel as to start earthing things with a red wire... I hope!) so I think you may be looking at the wrong wire, or a positive feed as been connected where it shouldn't be.

Can you put in a known good earth (i.e. patch a wire direct to bare metal) to prove the above hypothesis?

It should be a simple two wire set up. One wire to the positive terminal on the coil. One wire to earth. If you get that done the rest should look after itself.

Try the other spade?? If it shoots to 8K it means you've connected it directly to a constant positive.

Guys,

I know that RED is never used as an earth under any circumstances, that much I remember from my electrics classes.

The wiring is I am describing is standard on all leyland 'S' minis. :?

I agree that one should be power & one should be earth. :)

Cheers Pete

There is no other spade terminal.

Morris 1100,

The best answer to that question is..., with the engine running, I removed the white wire with black trace from the coil & the engine stopped! Tacho drops to nothing, does that tell you if its pos+ or neg-. :)

Pete :)

Ok folks, just to let you all know the Headlight Upgrade is completed. 'The Brick' now has wipac quadoptics lights installed..., & in case you are all wondering, They work very well! :D I also replaced the voltage stabliser behind the instument console. The fuel gauge & temp work now as well.

The Tacho was not connected up, so I hooked it up as well. However there is a problem with the Tacho reading 8000 rpm as soon as ignition key is turned to Aux or Ign positions. :o

The Tacho is wired in the following way...... Red wire with female spade terminal to male spade terminal, printed circuit circle hole screwed down, white wire with black trace that has a female bullet terminal is connected to male bullet terminal.

So the big question is What the Hell is going on? Any ideas?

Have moved this Tacho problem to a seperate/new topic.
