I think it's easier if the question is, What wouldn't I do for my own shed?...

Hey Tricky,

Just wondering if you could shed some light in regards to laws with a different fuel tank and using coilovers? I plan on doing both, and from what I have found you need a LM1 for fuel tank alteration? But can't find anything with the coilovers.

Also, just as advice more than anything, with the 13" rims what would you ideally choose 13x7, 13x5 etc. I will be looking into rims like Volk. I thought I should ask someone who is doing it/gone through it.

Cheers, Sam

G'day Sam,

Yes, the fuel tank must meet the LM1 NCOP guidelines for alternative/replacement fuel tanks - see Section 2.2. You really only need to worry about ground clearance and emissions control (as in fuel return lines, charcoal canisters, vapour scrubbers etc). Fairly easy stuff to comply to and you should not have any worries!

Coilovers, according to my Engineer, and also according to the NCOP, are ok, as long as they have been engineered for that particular vehicle. I bought the kit from Huddersfield which were Gaz units. My engineer did not have a problem with them as long as I reinforced the front and rear upper coilover mounting points!! Likewise, he did not have an issue with Heim joints etc

I chose the 13x7's because of looks primarily. Because I am running a (modified) Zeemax kit for El Gato, anything less than this width would not fill the guards and look a bit silly! Mind you, they are heavier than all the other possibilities, and more expensive, and the tyres are more expensive too. But, if you want that 'look'.....
If you are running smaller arches, then 13x5's would be ok. I wanted El Gato to look modern which mean the largest diameter wheel I could fit. I have seen some use 14's. and I think it needs to be tastefully done to look ok!! Its basically personal preference, but 13's are fine for my application.

Hope this helps...

Cheers,
Tricky

Thanks for the reply mate, helped clear up some confusion I had going on. Still undecided about the wheels haha, but I reckon I will end up going for something that I can get rubber for easier than the other ones.

Cheers, Sam

Well believe it or not I actually did something to El Gato this weekend.

I have been inspired by the Ol' Sock (Hallsey) - Steve Hall - Of Hall Engineering to get the thing finished so we can get it on the road and enjoy it.

You see I have always had this problem whereby I continually look for perfection in everything I do. That means I do one job, then sometime later I learn a better way to do the same job so I redo it. And I continually spend my time doing, then redoing the work time after time. Its a fatal flaw in my character. I guess what this means is that you never get to complete anything!!!

So, for the past week or so I have been in consultation with Hallsey and his great advice to me was 'draw a line in the sand and just get on with it'. Sage advice from a guy who has been there and done that. In other words, get it finished and on the road and enjoy it and if you want later on you can come back and modify or change something. So simple, but I just couldnt see it - thanks Hallsey!!

So, in light of this, we have decided to take a route less onerous - I wont call it a short cut, its just simply a different tack!! The interior for instance ICE components will not be paint finish but be covered in faux leather. This will cut down the finishing time by about 2/3rds or more. Simply, no more endless hours of bogging, sanding, filling and more sanding. Instead, a quick hit with some bog and high-build, and thats it. Simple.

In essence a bit more of this:

And a bit less of this:
Image

Enough rambling, here is what went on, on Sunday:
The sub-board was finished with some rings to house the subs in the same fashion as the mid-bass and rear parcel shelf item. They were then glued together and then glued to the board:
Image
Then it will be a matter of covering the board in cloth and resin just like the other items.

Next my attention turned to the centre console. It will have to be made in two parts just to be able to fit. First off we have to know where everything fits - the seat bracket, seat belts, geareshift and handbrake...
Image

From there, we can take measurements and get a general shape of what the console might look like, and of course making it as aesthetic as possible. We then transfer these dimensions to cardboard - its always better to muck up a template then muck up the real thing:
Image

Once the template has been maked out and cut out, its time for a test fit:
Image
Hmmm, not to bad! But we better make sure that the organic forms flow evenly from one piece to another:
Image
Again not bad!!
It may look a bit high, but when you bring it into perspective with the seats in situ:
Image

Then cut out the real thing and test fit:
Image
Again, not too bad. To get the 3-dimensional curve, I cut kerfs full length in the mdf so it could bend in 2 planes and mould to the preceeding shape made by the mid-bass enclosure. Then, add some formers in between to mould it to and to hold the shape:
Image

Next, will be to finish the front of the console to allow it to fit to the next part seamlessly, and also to put a top on it. Once this is done, we can fair it up, and then bog and sand it one time in readiness for faux leather covering. This means the console will match the seats, which match the dash pads etc etc.

No need to reinvent the wheel time after time...

Cheers,
Tricky

It's making for one giant centre console. Looking great Tricky!!

Hey Tricky, glad to hear you are back on track with the cat.

I definitely know where you are coming from (even though you are doing a much nicer job of 'el gato' than I am with my 1100). I think we all like the stuff we do to be, well if not 'perfect', at least as close as we can get it.

There are at least a dozen things I'd change on mine, and I still have a way to go. Some major, like the subframe design, some are more minor things. I think the thrill of driving it will help me to forget all that stuff once it's done. And yeah, we can always tweak and play once they are on the road, you know like normal (mini) people do...

Can't wait for more progress pics mate!

Cheers

Hi My Friends,

Gordo - yes, it can be a curse for sure. It makes for a lot of time-wasting in the end and definitely brings in the Law of Diminishing Returns! I just need to get on with it as Hallsey says!

MM - Me too! I really want to finish it now. With all those Mexicans (read: southerners) enjoying their conversions, most of whom have stated way after me, I feel like I am being a bit pedantic with El Gato and how it should look, perform, feel etc. I could spend forever chasing my tale but never complete it. Just need a good kick in the ass and stop fluffing around. I want to go driving in my Mini!! More progress to come at regular intervals - I promise!!

Cameron - Hi buddy, long time no hear. Maybe I can inspire you Cam?? Oh, need to pick up that inlet pipe from you too. How long have you had that - 12 months???? C'mon Cam, lets get them on the road together!!!

So, full steam ahead I guess and damn he torpedoes (read: my own silly idea of perfection in everything!)

Cheers and thanks,
Tricky
