did you do anything to cause it, or did it just happen?

Well yeah I suppose too many revs, I noticed an engine vibration on the way home from a club sprint in tamworth.

Its all good Graham... I knew something wasn't right at the practice day we had. At least it's no longer a mystery.
I'll sort it out over summer, do some work on the gearbox and diff as well and should have her back on the road in time for the cooler period.
I might go a little easier on the revs though.

Well I have been busy with christmas and all but now I have pulled the crank out and measured up... It aint good.

Yep the crank is EN40b cooper S but was on 40 thou undersize already and the main bearing surfaces are badly worn. I'm told this is the max regrind possible

The block has some flairing on the center main journal, so I guess a line bore would be needed to fix this.

Just thought I would post the update in the hope that someone might tell me that its not as bad as I think

Ahhh,,, bad luck Richard,,, i`m often so awesome when i`m right,,, but other times i really do hate it when i`m right :-(

Probly an oil surge issue when you`re fangin it around corners that`s caused it mate

not much time to look at oil guages etc when you`re into it around the bends

do you ever fill it a tad more with oil before a speed event (500ml more)???? because that`s what i do if i`m floggin an engine without a central oil pick-up fitted

Yeah it has a central pickup in the sump and I usually make sure it is very full and the oil is changed before every event or long trip.

Just one of those things that happens I suppose.

I will be looking for a good S crank soon though and beef up the bottom end with a centre strap or 4 bolt main, the block will need to be line bored anyway.

Cheers.

Give the crank plenty of endfloat- .003" just ain't enough for a hig revving 1275, the crank webs flex and grab the thrust washers, then the centre main overheats. As I found out. Luckily mine didn't quite spin in the block, as I stopped when the oil pressure started to go south.

I use .006-.007" end float now, GR uses a bit more.

poo - that's basically the reason why I run an 1100S motor...

the original S motor is on the shelf, and the 1100S motors can have as many rebuilds, breakages or modifications as I want, without any concern for longevity

Do you find the 1100s block to be stronger or is it just so you don't destroy your rare "s" motor?
