what's the consensus on what black paint to use underbody?

i'm preferring brush on

should it be a tar based goop or just a hardcore enamel?

I had trouble with tar based. Good protection but painting over it was difficult as top coat would react and soften tar then when drying around corner areas (concave radius) the paint would lift of the body in those small areas.

* Have noticed some using WURTH SKS (spelling?) - Some reports of certain areas not drying, but it might be what I try next time?
* Have also read some using hard ute tray back type stuff - Have read some reports that its very hard for your top coat (primer, etc) to key (etch) to it.

Glad mines finished anyway, wasnt the most enjoyable part of the project for me, but very satisfying knowing the whole underside of the car is sealed up nice and fresh hopefully for longer then 43 years this time

PS, I seam sealed all the seams before applying, and I found spraying was easier, quicker and gave the original look.

Did u guys want the correct stuff? I can find the name out . The stuff they used in the factory. It gives a smooth finish. And easy to paint over.

i'm actually looking to do the chassis of my trailer.

my trailer is a chassis with a ute body mounted on it.

I'm changing the body as it's rusting out but the chassis is solid and strong and already at least 30 years old so wanting it to last me another 30 years.

would i be better off using a chassis black or a killrust epoxy enamel?

On my '65 Deluxe I used a CAM brand paintable underbody. Get a $20 Shutz underbody gun and run at about 60psi.

Some products you can paint over and some not. The paintable one goes on a matt finish. Put a primer on top before colour.






On the 'Skippy' Moke project I chose a black (non paintable) product from CALAD. Will take probably 2 tins to cover complete underbody. Cost abput $10 a tin.






I can see in the photos I missed a few bits!

Similar to miniDave, I like the K&H product called C Guard.
Applies the same, with a proof coat gun, doesnt require you to be an expert to use it, and they offer grey, black and white, in both water based and solvent based.
The solvent based also comes in grey and black aerosol packs.
