Hi Guys, Just after a few ideas on what may be wrong with my brakes . I have converted my 76 clubby to 8.4" discs , i have got new drilled and slotted rotors and new ebc black stuff pads , the calipers were second hand but i put new seals in them . I have put cooper s 5/8" rear wheel cylinders on the back. The problem i'm having is the pedal pressure seems quite hard and the brakes don't seem to pull up as well as they should , i should also note the rear shoes are new and adjusted properly .Is it possibly that there is a master cylinder fault or the wrong type ( ie a clutch one instead !) as even before i put discs on the pedal effort was quite hard . i would be grateful for any ideas . Also does anyone have a good working heater tap to suit a clubby internal type.

Hard pedal is what you want, are the pads correctly bedded in?
When I did my 8.4s the brakes were terrible, improved a bit with use but not much.
Changed to softer pad, all fixed.

yes pads are bedded in and been on there a while now but like you said haven't improved much, they just don't seem to have much bite.

If coming from drums, yes the pedal is harder to push.
Fit a servo if you want more bite and less pedal pressure (like a modern whitegoods car).

What master cylinder are you using?
I assume the standard Clubbie master and pro portioning valve?

yes standard clubby master cylinder and valve .

If it was me I would be checking the Master cylinder first, put a new kit through it or have it reconditioned and if still no change then it could be the proportioning valve.
Usually the valves just leak but still work, so I would definitely have a look at your master cylinder. I have a different master cylinder to you but with my new 8.4 disk brakes I find they pull up very well.

i would try cheap standard pads . or maybe scuff of the rotors with some 120 gritt paper

What about m/c bore sizes? If it has big bore m/c it'll give poor braking : effort ratio.

EBC Blackstuffs do have better cold bite than most cheapo pads do.
But not so great once heated up... that's why I've gone back to Greenstuffs.
(The Blackstuffs will go into the wife's van )
