Hi all.

The clubman I bought recently has a 998 that is a bit tired, and the gearbox is a bit ordinary, particularly second gear.

The plan for this car is to use it to teach my daughter to drive then, when she has her own car, embark on a engine conversion and body restoration.

I'd like to fix the gearbox and use a freshened engine without going silly. The thought process at the moment is leaning toward finding a 1275 and gearbox that need work, repairing/rebuilding them, then dropping them in so the car is only off the road for a short time, and I have the advantage of the little bit of extra oomph that a 1275 will provide.

Can anyone steer me in the direction of a source of second hand engines and gearboxes that may yield what I am looking for?

!275 engines are getting hard to find and not cheap to buy any more.

Take into consideration that if you fit a 1275 into any mini then disc brakes are a legal requirement.

Without getting into a circular argument that says "my drum brakes are perfect" the drums are only just adequate and the extra "oomph" from a 1275 makes the car rather under braked especially for an inexperienced driver.

You also have to change the rear wheel cylinders to suit the disc brakes but that is a relatively inexpensive and easy job to do.

I also recommend Josh at mini imports, why bother trying to find a 30+ year old small bore when you can get a more recent 1275 and all the goodies.
Yes disk brakes are a legal requirement.

Contrary to popular belief drum brakes will in fact stop you better than disks as they have heaps more surface area and as they turn they "lock on" so you are not limited by hydraulics.

HOWEVER they will only do this once, so its purely academic and they need constant adjustment so disks win out.

Question about the brakes, does anyone know if u require the 8.4" disc brakes or can you use the 7.5" ones that fit under 10" rims? I'm doing the same thing soon but would like to keep 10" rims

7.5 S discs are fine.. no need for 8.4s unless running dirty big wheels.
Some here may tell you you need a servo, but they work fine without (using EBC blackstuff or greenstuff pads).

[edit] But stay away from 7" Cooper 997 or 998 discs, they are too thin and the 997 pads are postage stamps. Good for Cooper period correctness only.

And if using a rover import you cant go down in size without engineering approval.

Is this legislated somewhere, or is it the same theory that says just because a Cooper S ran a servo, everybody must (with 7.5 discs)?

The brakes will be the first port of call, regardless of power plant. I'm trying to find information on the bumpsteer characteristics, and if there is a known fix, when using 12" wheels. If there is, then I will go to the metro turbo brakes. The plan is to make this a solid all round performer in the future, with brakes and handling being at the top of the list.
