A bit cheaper from USA, but that's further to send and complain to if I have a warranty problem.

MTX-L A/F gauge kit arrived yesterday. I just need to fab up a sensor clamp/mount for the tailpipe, extend the power cables to reach the battery and it should be a goer next week. :P

Hi Doc

i have the innovate tailpipe clamp and i would recommend sticking the tube ( the part that catches the exhaust gas further up than on the bought one)

For 'fabrication' the innovate tube is 14cm long on top and rolls round and under - to flow past the sensor and then back ) it is 1cm diameter
Image

i have a single pipe that exits via twin upswept pipes and my tailpipe readings were affected by this - only the idle - when it wasn't pushing much exhaust gas. I put a bung in a no such problems. It may not be a problem on single pipe , but it may be worth sticking it further up.

cheers FNQ

I copied mine from the one GR uses.
It is a straight 8" long bit of 3/4" bore pipe, the sensor spud is welded on 3" from the aft end.
So there is ~5" of sensor pipe up inside the tailpipe.

All assembled now as a portable, is in car, will go for a test drive tomorrow.
I used an M18x1.5 nut for the sensor's mount, and kept the spud they supplied in case I want to weld that into the LCB's Y-piece as a permanent install.

It's alive!!
Mounted in end of the tailpipe it doesn't work at idle, due to the cam it has in- it just reads 22.4 due to all the air going to and for.

Meter works great once off idle though- running around in traffic it seems a little rich (11.5-12.0) cruising at light throttle openings, but once up to 1/4 throttle and above it's sitting around 13.0-13.5. I've not had it past 4000 rpm yet though.
I will try slightly leaner idle jets, but really, it's closer to correct than I thought it would be, considering how I tuned it.
I'll do a couple of freeway on-ramps tomorrow and see if the top end leans out.. or not. :P

Good work Kevin,

I have the innovate item like GR's (LM1) and its pretty good, i used a bigger size pipe to catch more exhaust gas.

light throttle mine is at low to mid 20's and as soon as i go above that it drops to 15-16 and on hard acceleration on 15 to 18 pound boost i am at 12.5 to 13.5, so i am pretty happy with it.

would be interesting to do a back to back test on both units.

Grant

Back from holiday and straight back into it I see

Presumably if the unit was mounted at the extractors/collector, you would get a good reading at idle as well, as no fresh air would be reaching it?

Yes, it would work at idle if sensor was mounted in the headers, however I wanted it portable so I can check both my cars, and also help other people.

I'm not installing it permanently- because I'd say once the jetting is set up, the gauge would be about as useful in the dash as having a vacuum gauge..

OK after fiddling with jetting I've settled on 54 idle jets, 155 mains and 180 air correctors.
It cruises along at around 16.0-17.0:1, goes to about 13.0:1 at full throttle and it's not leaning out the top end.
Chokes are still 36mm.

Did you change the idle jet holders?

Nope.
I didn't change the emulsion tubes either, they are still the .6 ones.

BTW I emailed you before that my old idle jets were 50, but they were actually 55.
It is noticeably leaner now with the 54s in. I had to open up the idle mixture screws 3/4 turn.

I'll go see GR tomorrow and check the 55s were not in fact drilled out bigger..

After driving it a bit more, the 54 idle jets are just slightly too small- it idles OK, but has a flat spot just above idle. So, the `55's are back in.

[edit] these 55s turned out to be 58s, someone drilled em before I got the carb.
So I had GR drill the 54s out to 55 (0.55mm) today.

[edit 2]
155s (actual size) are working fine, idles OK and no flat spots off idle- compared to them the 154s were way lean and the (actual size) 158s obviously too rich.
I'll buy a pair of 156s to try also, but the 155s can stay in for now.

I am amazed that a 0.01mm size change in an idle jet has so much effect on the mixture over such a large throttle range...

Well I took it for a run up to Pie in the Sky yesterday. Since I checked the Dellorto's A/F ratio and rejetted it, it is going like the proverbial sh!te off a shovel.
It has never gone so hard, and it is using less fuel too. 8)
