Greetings All.
having a mysterious break in ignition. Maybe once a day, I'd be driving along, then it goes "as if" the ignition has been turned off. I push the starter button (850 floor start) and away we go again. Checked all the dissy wires, and everything seems good. Only happens once a day.

Coming home from work today, I had it flat out up Tapley's Hill. In top gear, it died for about 3 seconds, then Booooooooom! away it went. Nearly blew my exhaust off. Obviously I still had the pedal to the metal and it backfired. My hearts still racing!
(You may have heard it in Melbourne!)
Would the coil fail like this, could it be a bad wire? Fuse, earth?
I'm thinking I'll set it idling, and pull and push everything from the key, to the dissy.

Anyone else had this fault?

Cheers
Alex.

Yes I had it happen this week. Was driving along @ 90kmh or so, car missed a few beats, tacho needle wavered a little... it came good, then did it again shortly after.
*aha!* sez he, it's a primary ignition circuit fault.
Stopped car and checked coil connections, all were tight (mine are screwed on, not spade lugs).
Electronic Pulsar dizzy, can't be points. Must be something else..

Turned out to be the lower (switched) fuse in the fuseblock.
When you turn the ignition on, the switch sends 12V+ to this fuse- all the switched fuse items including ignition, stop lights, blinkers run through that fuse. In my case it wasn't blown- just a little dirty. I rolled it about a bit and it's been fine since.
Will remove fuses and clean fuseblock contacts tomorrow...

DrMini.

Sounds like a plan! I'll check that first. Thanks.

Alex.

Lol this happened to me last week.
I had no tools with me  so waited an hour for the RAC man and turned out to be the lower fuse
Replaced and away it went.I noticed the fuel gauge wasnt working when it was broken which makes sense based on what the Doc said.

Kev, The feed from the Ignition switch to the coil (White wire) should not go through the Ignition fuse.

Thanks Tony, I just checked the diagram, you are right- it looks like my coil wire is on the wrong (fused) side of the (lower) fuse block.
However it ain't broke...

[edit] A byproduct of cleaning the fuse contacts is the stop lights and blinkers are now brighter! :P 8)
