I have imported 6 x AO32s with no questions or fees from the UK.

Also imported rose petals with no probs either.

Easy.

Importing a second hand engine and importing a set of new rims
is very different. If I'd have paid an extra $500 for door to door
shipping I'd have saved 500-1000 dollars.
Because I went for the pick up at the port I've had logistics fees in Aus and Aus customs broker fees.
A licence to import an engine is required and an inspection too. In all the fees in Aus to get the bloody thing are more than the engine with freight.
That excludes the fact I now need quarantine storage because I didn't
know any of this and customs takes 3 weeks. In all I've waisted a shed
load of cash in Aus import fees making it a VERY expensive stock standard
engine. I've imported brand new stuff before (keeping below the $1000)
delivered to my door without issue. Goods hitting the ports though seems
to be an all out assault on your hard earned.

Just Bumping this as I am currently getting bent over for an engine. How did you get on with the broker MiniDave?

I remembered that I used to compete in rallies against a customs broker and after a quick search on google managed to track him down. He took care of all the paper work although I had to go back to the tyre company in Finland for some signed papers etc. The freight forwarders at the docks hit me up for $266 but his broker fee was only $150.

Highly recommended and is car and motorsport specialist:

I was a little under prepared as I thought my tyres were door to door delivery. When they turned up at the ports you only have three days to get them or the storage fees kick in.

Once I had the paperwork the battle was to find the correct gate. You need a 'delivery notice' that has a the location of where the goods are warehoused I found there were two lanes - import and export, so make sure you wait in the correct lane. When at the front you need to take all the paperwork to the front office and you must be wearing correct PPE (vests, hat, boots). When all stamped go to another lane where items are loaded and out of there.

Currently working on another order for March 2013 that will be twice the size of this one.

Dave are you bringing in enough to supply a few to me? Can I add some in the order. We are in desperate need for some 10's for the Khana's and the odd motorkhana that lets us run them.

Hay, it's not about the car, it's not about the venue, it's about the people that come here. Peter Dwyer, Mayor of Hay NSW.
