Hi everyone

I hope you all had a fantastic holidays.

I wanted to get some advice on painting my front and rear subframes, mostly what products peope have used and the resault after being on the road for a while.

I am going to use a few coats of etch primer, then I am tossing up using either
Septone Chassis Black
or
Septone Subframe Black

Not sure which one to go for, or if there is a better protuct to use

Any help you be much appreciated

I've just painted my subframes in Protec 363 automotive enamel, its badged as Autofleet. The guy at the paint supply shop confirmed what I though as being perfectly suitable for subframes and radius arms etc. He did advise against using those chassis black paints for some reason but I can't remember why. I also chose the Protec brand because because I've used it alot in the past and because they are based here in SA. How did it turn out, very glossy, perfect job. The car is far from ready for the road so I can't say how it will last. But I was assured it was the product for the job.
People told me to use 2pack but because I don't have the correct gear and I respect my neighbours I won't use it.

VHT Roll Bar and Chassis paint seems to do the job well! $25 from Repco.

I used Aldi gloss black enamel, it's good stuff! Brushed it on and it levels like POR15 does, no brush marks!

Por 15 gloss black followed by Por chassis black

The chassis black is not a gloss finish
12 months on and you can hit it with a hammer and not chip it
so far so good

Pretty much any solvent, strong cleaning agent, lubricant etc that you use on cars or even around the house is a potential carcinogen. It is entirely up to the user to educate themselves and take adequate safety precautions. These days the safety data sheet of most products can be found on the manufacturers website and you should find it and read it.

With the new workplace health and safety laws many workplaces won't allow a chemical on-site without a current SDS.

IMO just about any metal suitable paint will do, we don't salt the roads here, so subframes don't die from corrosion in 5 years like in the UK.
If you keep mud off them you can still see the `Mowog' stencilled on originals 40 or 50 years ago.

The nasty solvent in the chassis products is xylene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylene). Not all that nasty unless you drink the stuff or huff the vapours.

California is paranoid about any volatile hydrocarbon...
