A 3.93 in a Mini would be a bit silly. But it should be just fine in a big wheeler Moke.

Cheers,
Brett.

I run a 3.647 in my 1360 Mini with 10" wheels, 110KMH on the TomTom GPS is 4600 rpm. It's great everywhere except on the freeway but I don't do much of that. :P

My wife's 850 has (as far as I know) a 3.76 in it. I briefly ran it up to 110kph on my Tom Tom on the Calder Fwy yesterday. I didn't hold it there long as it sounded mighty busy and I didn't want to damage it. It has no tacho but according to my calculations it was turning around 4500rpm.

Withe the new diff in the Moke on 185/60R13 tyres it should be turning about 3800 at 100kph. Same revs as a Mini on 10's running a 3.44. Just about ideal IMHO. I can always fit taller tyres later if I decide I want to drop the cruising revs a little more.

Cheers,

Note the tallest one in cars sold here was the 3.444.
This was used in the Cooper S and most rodchange boxes except the Mokes.

3.647 was used in most remote boxes (Mini K and 1098 Clubby) except Cooper S

3.765 was used in 850, 997 & 998 Cooper, and 998 Deluxe.

3.9 never sold here,

4.13 and 4.26 are found in Mokes and Morris 1100 & 1100S.

I may be wrong
I thought the 3.9375 was fitted to the Moke for a short period

You could be right John, I forgot about the Mini's ugly cousin.

Ive never heard of a Moke with a 3.94 from the factory but it wouldn't surprise me. The only factory application I could find was an Innocenti model.

Then I'd go for a 3.2 or 3.1 diff esp if you've got loads of power.

Personally I am in love with 3.44 and will stick with that until further notice

I'd give a 3.1 a go in my car... bit more legs in 1st gear for the big motorkhana tests. Gives 61kph at 7000rpm, up from 55.5kph

I've got plenty of torques to spare :D

I'm pretty sure I have a 3.1 in my current engine (1990 Rover Cooper 1275 carby). I really like the highway cruising RPM, just a matter of finding a spare one.

Ya I'm at the other end of the scale from the Doc - I'd love a 3.1 to quiet down the highway and give some legs to 1st for motorkhanas. Only place to get them is new though $$$

Considering most Rovers were on bigger wheels I'd say compare them to mokes.

Rovers had lower profile tyres on their 12" rims so the overall diameter is only a little bit bigger. As stated above, the mini was well past its used by date when still being sold in the 90's and had trouble complying with modern regs. The ultra tall diff was purely a drive-by noise test thing. I remember reading road tests of minis before the 1275 reappeared and every one lamented the gearing.

Are the A+ crownwheel and pinion different to pre A+?
The likes of minispares.com make mention of the fact that certain ratios are A+; is this just down to the fact that they originally came fitted to A+ boxes, or that they are somehow different / incompatible?

They are different tooth profile to A series and must be fitted as a set (ie both gears A+).
But all ratios can be put in an early box, however 3.2:1 and taller need the mainshaft bearing's retainer plate bored out to clear the bigger pinion.
