Hi, was wondering if the Cooper S had a special cam profile? If so, is there a new cam on the market that is close too or a replica of one?

Also what was the lift ratio of the rockers fitted to S motors?

Looked through my several manuals and couldn't find any specs.

Cheers.

They did, but there is a MKI and and MKII profile.

Wade and Tighe Cams do them.

http://www.wadecams.com/

http://www.tighecams.com.au/

Lift ratio of genuine S rockers was all over the shop, they were pretty poorly made. Supposed to be 1:1.27 but as found will be anywhere from 1:1.1 to maybe as much as 1:1.3. The pressed Rockers are better.

The same with tighe cams states Cooper S standard profile, no 196.

neither mk1 or mk2 Cooper S?

Also is AEA648 profile no. 176 a S profile?

AEA648 is a full race cam. You would be a masochist to run one in traffic.

Early Mk1S had the same lift profile as a Morris 1100, but on a 1/2" wide lobed cam.
Duration 5-45/51-21.

Later Mk1, also Mk2S was slightly more intake duration, at 10-50/51-21.

Neither of these cams were sporty, hence why most have been reground.

The best Cooper cam IMO was the one in the 997, it was 16-56/51-21.

[edit] re the S rockers I compared most of them a while back on a new rocker shaft with an RE13 cam (.290" lobe lift), & a 12G1316 head with new valves in..
Worst ratio were the forged Cooper S ones at 1.16:1
Best were the pressed steel 850-998-1098 ones at 1.21:1.
Sintered A+ ones were in between.

So out of both lists wade and tighecams

which profile no.? Would best suit the mk2 Cooper S profile/road use?

Albeit if a little bit sportier than original profile

Yes. The C-AEA731 (pin drive) or C-AEA800 (spider drive) was a BMC Special Tuning Rally camshaft so good for high speed pursuit work in the SPO41 (Police specification) cars.

According to the Special Tuning data book the timing was 24-64 / 59-29, 268 degrees inlet and exhaust period, and .252" cam lift and .320" valve lift.

I ran a factory 731 in my 1310S for a while, with offset bushed S rockers. It wasn't too bad, but the Camtech 619 (VP3) I replaced it with went a lot harder. Bottom end torque was lower though.
The 619 eventually wore the lobes out so I fitted a Russell Engineering RE13, it was a lot better for low down torque and had the same top end.

What is the go now?

wade, profile no.?
tighecams, profile no.?
Or do most run Russel Engineering cams?

Looking for a camshaft that is sportier than standard cooper S and is suitable for Cooper S oil pump, and what's the best lifters for 1275/Cooper S mk1 and mk2?

IMO the best lifters at the moment are Minispares' Isky pattern, or their lightened ones.
Available here from the usual Mini suppliers in each state, and they are not expensive with the current exchange rate.
Beware cheapo ones, you get what you pay for these days.

re the cams, you will get a wide cross section of favourites suggested here. I have tried many but now use Russell's cams because they work well, and he is local to me.

For road grinds he normally regrinds your cam, you supply a standard one of your choosing whether pin drive (S) spider drive (1100S) or slot drive (A+).
Alternatively he can grind it onto a new billet, I'm not sure whether pin drive is available in this case, ring him and ask. Billet costs more $$$, obviously.

S pin drive oil pumps AEG410 have been hard to get for a while, but they are appearing again. Pin drive is not the strongest, some recent aftermarket pump shafts have been known to break off at the slot if oil pressure is too high. However the Minisport (SA) ones use a stronger Australian made shaft.
You could use a slot drive pump, either with a slot drive cam, or a spider drive cam + a slot drive adaptor. You need to tap another mounting hole in the S block to fit this pump.
Looks like this-

Graham Russell has these adaptors in stock.

Probably the first question somebody should ask you is what are you looking for. If you are after a standard S cam because you want to keep your car original, then just do that. If you wish to chase some extra power it gets a little more involved than picking someones suggested cam because it works for them. You need to decide what you intend using the car for and what you want out of it before considering a cam choice. There are plenty of people on here who can guide you but pick and choose the advice you follow.
