Hi all,

Anyone know or recommend a good aluminium welder?

I have a gearbox case that has been welded prior near sump plug and it was a little rough and leaked a little so I would like to have it redone.

Thanks

Mini gearbox casings can be difficult to weld, but devcon works a treat, just grind back along the affected area and apply! Have seen an engine block repaired with this stuff on a race mini engine, and it lasted years.

Do you need a replacement case? I have several you can take a look at?

Graham has a nice tig that might do the job, but as said they are soaked in oil so can be difficult to weld.

but yeah graham did repair a crack on the back of mine that has held up well. :)

Graham is your man, he did a 1935 Alvis cast alloy gearbox part for me a few weeks ago.
It was oily too, I first had to cook it on the BBQ in boiling water and detergent and scrub it with a SS brush to get the 80 year old oil out.

He only has one name, he only needs one name.
Just think Beyonce, Kylie, Oprah, Elvis and then try to get that image out of your head!

I've had 4 cases repaired in the last couple of years by welding up the sump plug hole entirely where it was either stripped, cracked or the repair was dodgy and leaked. Local aluminium welding specialist Norweld in Cairns did them. Oil soaking wasn't mentioned as a problem. I do put them thru the hot tank at the engine shop though.
Then have my friendly machinist cut a new sump plug thread (5/8" UNC) and face the outside of the case square to the thread so no more leaks.

Well you got 1 out of 4, Beyonce is the only one of these that only uses the 1 name, the others all use/used 2.

Some other examples that you might have used are Prince, Madonna and Pink
