How can I identify camshafts?
What numbers should I be looking for and any other obvious things that help tell them apart (eg say a 998 cam from a mk1 S cam)?

Numbers, lobe size (width), drive, number of rings. Grab a Vizard book. It will help identify factory cams.

small-bore cams are normally narrow lobes (3/8"ths) & pin-drive-->, except the Late A+ 998 which are slot/spade drive

1100"S" cams are all wide lobe 1/2" & are spider drive

Cooper"S" are wide lobe & pin-drive

Late 1275 A+ are all spade-drive wide lobes

.............................................................................

If you are planning on finding a suitable cam for your twinky to grind all the lobes off, then maybe a spade drive cam as they`re easier to find,,, easy to get oil pumps to suit,,, & also fit the block you`re using too :-)

If you find any narrow lobe spider drive cams, they came out of a 998 auto or 1098 auto.

David Vizard's book "tuning the A series engine" has an excellent table for identifying factory camshafts including the performance cams available from the factory.

I have always wondered about a particular Cam shaft that I have which is spider drive type and 3/8 lobe. What would it's origin be?

Automatic 998 mini or auto Morris 1100 (1098) for sure. The autos all got spider drive until 1980 because of their HUGE oil pump.
A pin drive would shear off driving that pump.
I have no idea what the Rover automatics have from 1980 on, whether still spider drive or they went to slot drive.
