Well thought i'd fit my new wheel brake cylinders today and have come up with a bit of a problem , the holes dont line up with the new cylinders .



So do i just file the back plate to fit as ones way out and the other is slightly out?

Day didnt start well either bought some new grease and a kinchone grease gun , decided to make sure grease would get to the ball joint socket " it did " ..... so i put the grease gun on the grease nipple and.................. the bloody thingy wouldnt come of so i used a bit if muscle to pull it off and the top of the grease nipple snaps off in the tip of the gun ...arrrgghhhh .

Whay a freakin day.

Yea just rip in with a file, fairly common problem

I read somewhere it needs to be filed out, unsure where I read it? I think it was when upgrading from 15/16ths to 1 inch.
Are these the 1" cylinders?
For memory mine did fit and I was surprised I didn't need to do any mods!

I recently upgraded the fronts to discs and the rear cylinders to 5/8ths and was surprised when they fit without mods as well.

Thanks mmm & Jubblies , they are 15/16 they were the ones karcraft recomended for my model part #GWC126 & 127 " 73 clubby " so i will just file them out then , bit of a pain but what can you do " hopefully the rear ones fit without any mods".

You can get the back plates from karcraft for the 15/16 wheel cyl i changed mine cause one adjuster was loose and kept slipping

There is post on here about the holes a few weeks ago

Mg spares at smithfield sell 1' wheel cylinders thats where i got mine from before i realised the adjuster was stuffed on passenger side

Thats rather disapointing then as Karcraft were the ones telling me which wheel cylinders i needed for my 73 mini and reading that post he says from 74 onwards they were 15/16 ..... damn not sure what to do now as the back plates are over $100 each and dont need replacing anyway ..... arrrggghhh .

Edit : I will ring Karcraft tomorrow and organise an exchange.

There is nothing wrong with the wheel cylinders.

In about 1974 Leyland changed the stud pattern and backing plates when they introduced 15/16" wheel cylinders to replace the 1" wheel cylinders.

To stop people replacing a 1" cylinder with a 15/16" cylinder Leyland changed the stud pattern slightly. This was a safety measure.

People are too quick to always blame the replacement part.

If fitting the latter 15/16" cylinders to a 1" car all you have to do is slightly elongate the hole in the backing plate. Using a round file it will take about 1 minute to do.

This slight modification has been around for over 30 years so it is not new !

I have now done this mod to all my drum brake minis. I usually use a dremel, much quicker than a file
The rears have never been a problem, only the front.

I was the other way round fitting 1' cyl to 15/16 backplates so i just went back and got some 15/16 cyl cause every thing was coming out to do the oil seals and inner cvs at the time

Modded the backplate and the cylinders fit fine " had a harder time putting the spings and shoes in " .
