P,s Good luck with your inspection

I think it's to prevent pebbles from being launched and cracking the glass on oncoming and following traffic. Pretty unlikely.

It is quite simple, they made a rule and it is a quite simple rule that the tyres should be covered by the mudguard. (the clue here is the words "mud" and "guard") It is to stop things getting flung off the tyres from hitting other vehicles and people.
Ever notice the amount of road grime that you get on the side windows when your tyres hang out too far?

I know it is a fashion statement by some people to let their tyres poke out from the guards but the rule is there and has always been there, just because you get away with it for a while does not make it somehow legal.

I used to run contessas without flares which clearly protruded from the guards more than Evan's, and never had any dramas with Police even when they followed me. Now run mini life with correct offset and A008s. Your welcome to borrow them for your inspection Evan.

on the original MK1 "S" the wheels/tyres stuck out the guards a tad,,, it was std issue
(excluding the very early 3.5" 1071"S"type)
Aust laws allowed it back then,,, after that they introduced laws suggesting that it was illegal

Ford had sold a cortina "G-Pac" with 6.5" wheels on it, but the sticker on the door said 5.5" wheels only

lots more examples out there

there was a time where "The Law" was that every single after-market road wheel & sports steering wheel was illegal, how stoopid is that hey???? But it was fact up here in Qld & cops were told to start booking people, funny enough they had filled the courts with stoopid defect notice suits,,, again just another example of the cops not having a clue to what they`re doing & what they have started.

the cops should set their minds/time/efforts at/towards sorting-out the actual dangerous criminals
out there & helping the inocent/helpless/pennyless/homeless people in trouble,,, instead of picking on cars with which they don`t like or are jealous of because they don`t own one

simple as that

& for the blow-off-valve people out there,,, the original law for that was because early turbo applications used "Suck-through" carby design where exccess fuel/air mixture would be blowing off... That is quite dangerous yes

But these days--> the late injected cars are only expelling plain simple air now (no fuel in the mix at that point) so the rule is basically redundant to these later applications & the police/dept of transport should do their homework & get their act together & stop picking on stoopid things like that & get to work sorting out the actual criminals in society instead of wasting their time & """OUR""" Money on trivial crap !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Mats memory is a little selective.... 145 tyres on standard S rims do not protrude from the arches as currently defined. They stick out a bit in front but not on the centreline of the tyre where the law requires it to be measured. SA had different regs. 165 tyres ((almost) 1 inch) wider may be legal - depending on the tyre.

Cheers, Ian

Just got pulled up by highway patrol to check my licence as we needed to pass through a closed area with the fires in Williamtown atm. Mr Plod then advises that my wheels are outside the guards and as such Barney is to be issued with a defect notice. 1 hour to get home, 21 days to fix or rego is cancelled.

ning nong was highly combative just to make the exchange all the more enjoybale. ning nong.

So where can I get a set of 10 x 5. Maybe rose petals.

:x

So some are still rabbiting on about slight protrusions, I feel your pain, what really, really, really annoys me is that they seem to let Hot Rodders cruise around (sometimes) with no guards :!:

PS agree...report the jerk...unacceptable behaviour

I am kinda ignoring this thread to keep my blood pressure reasonable...what a crock this interpretation of the "law"/"rools" is....the number of light and heavy trucks and jacked up 4WDs that have whole tyres completely exposed to chuck goolies at others is legion....(yes officer, that little bit of placky a foot above my completely exposed tyre makes it legal! What rot! )

add Totally ineffective Flood maps...

Did I mention Motorcycles?

Having said that I am not saying radical amounts of tyre tread outside Mini guards is a good thing or look :D

I failed inspection yesterday because my tyres are out passed the flares ( sportspack with 13x7)

I always thought the rule was all tread covered but side was was ok. i had about 3mm of tread showing, now its zero as i added more camber.

Anyone know that the rule is?
Whole tyre covered or just the tread?

Hi all,

Thanks to the good folk at Simpson Automotive, Barney is back on the road... and he looks angrified. Now running 1.5 degrees negative camber. If you're in Newcastle and need a hand with your car, as I've said before, go and see the boys at Broadmeadow.

To everyone who as offered wheels and shoulders to cry on, I thank you. Just noticed a few PMs with offers so once again the Ausmini forum proves itself as a wonderful community.

Cheers,

Evan

Now I look at Highway Patrol cars differently, which is a real shame.

Good to hear. Barney will go better with 1.5 degrees anyway so win win!
