You were supposed to drill 1/4" (from memory) holes into the sides of the body then put these plug things in the holes then clip the flares over them. I don't know if the factory ever used them on the early cars (I know the later ones didn't), but they seemed to be completely unnecessary, and would have done a lot of damage if you ever wanted to reverse it.

That is correct Tim, The plastic clip came in the fitting kit, they did use them at the factory
for a very short period of time, But they found that on the rear flares water leaked into the car,
You will notice on the round nose flares there is provision for the plastic clips,
But the clubman front have no such provisions, I still sell the fitting kits but always advise people not to use the plastic clips
