The odd times when I have removed the Aust Flares I just cut the metal back to the lip
edge and put the chrome strip back on hey presto Done :)
In the factory kit they gave You a set of self tappers so You could screw
the metal backing to the lip and then if You no longer want the flares then remove the
screws and flares, There is no reason why this cannot still be done
No filling sanding or Painting

I've still got a factory fitting set that John supplied years ago. It came with these big plastic stud things. You were supposed to drill 1/4" (from memory) holes into the sides of the body then put these plug things in the holes then clip the flares over them. I don't know if the factory ever used them on the early cars (I know the later ones didn't), but they seemed to be completely unnecessary, and would have done a lot of damage if you ever wanted to reverse it.

That is correct Tim, The plastic clip came in the fitting kit, they did use them at the factory
for a very short period of time, But they found that on the rear flares water leaked into the car,
You will notice on the round nose flares there is provision for the plastic clips,
But the clubman front have no such provisions, I still sell the fitting kits but always advise people not to use the plastic clips

I hadn't thought about the leaks they'd cause. Luckily the flares stay put just fine without them.
