Well I have picked up my next project.

Looks like an original Monaco built by Bill Buckle. Based on a 1964 850, and last registered in SA in 1980. It could be the upmarket model as it had the speedo in front of the driver and fancy door trims, but who knows. Needs a bit of a tidy up to bring it back to original condition.

So who is the expert on these?

I have a list of things which I want to get back to original like the roof lining, roof gutters at the rear and front, dash layout, etc but don’t know what was original.

Any history on this particular car? Had an 1100S engine and Cooper brakes. Looks like it was red from the original build.

Any help or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you will be pleased to know there are only about five road going cars an one race car left of around 25 to 30 built. Most we're built on 850's with a few Cooper and 'S'.

Whilst they are all a little different in build, I can tell yours is genuine and correct. There are a few big clues and others I won't mention on here. One big giveaway is the concave ramp angle of the windscreen wiper scuttle panel. It should be concave like yours, if it is a straight ramp and not concave, something is suspect. The other thing is the windscreen is a standard mini item and not a special piece of glass. The pipe work in the roof is also correct and yes the quality is not as flash as you would think!

It is a shame it is half de-seamed as you are a bit locked in there as it is hard to correct to original. The tail lights and indicators should also be standard items. Some of the big differences between cars are the rear window frames, some had full frames whilst others did not. The rear windows should be cut down glass with a Perspex rear window (some of the later cars are believed to be glass also). Most we're painted red, green or white. Often they were built from crashed cars. Stick your head under the top dash rail and you will see a large split, it is a good idea to spray some fish oil in there as they have a double scuttle panel. If it had the 'deluxe' dash etc, the wiper motor will be mounted inside the car in the dashboard area and not in the engine bay.

It is really great to see another, one day it would be great to do a photo shoot with them all together! :D

I can help with the original headlining too. The material was a ribbed off white vinyl that had a sponge back and glued in place. On either side, there should be a fibreglass moulding that covers the roof rails and pipe. If you look carefully at the pipes, you will see the screw holes where the mouldings screw into place.

Hi Monaco,
Thanks for the info.
I have the Perspex rear window and the two cut down glass side windows with hinge's and original relocated stays to open them. These have all been tinted at some stage.
I also have the two fibre glass mouldings for the side of the head lining, and one for the front.
The wiper motor is also mounted on the inside. Thus I guess it had the deluxe dash.
I also have the standard mini windscreen that came with it, with a 1980 rego sticker on it. This is a basic windscreen, not laminated like the S ones.
Plan is to replace the rear panel to change the tail lights back and put the seams back in place. I will also do the boot floor as it has some rust. Not sure how the seams meat the roof gutter. I will also put the standard indicator lights back on the front with more new panels.
The photo shoot sounds good, but I think I am a few years away.
