When/did the English Minis ever move to stamping the engine number directly onto the block instead of the riveted tags?

I know in Australia you have to have the number stamped on the block directly, so maybe this one has been done at a later date, and suffered from a typo?

Edit:
This late injected engine has the tag riveted on the block? All the tags I've been able to find in photos have a different font to yours too, and have been stamped from underneath so that the numbers are imprinted upwards

Engine tag example (it's an older engine though)

The best answer I can provide in accordance with Parts List AKM1217FR dated September 2001 which covers Rover Mini from 1990 on is:
12 - 1275cc
A - A series engine
2 - 8 valve configuration
A - carburetor specification
D - Throttle Body Injection, Base, 9.4:1
J33 - ???

There a number of "J" details relating to various engine/transmission configurations bu nothing like J33.

Sorry I can not be of more help

Cheers John,

Do you think the J33 could have anything to do with it possibly being a Japanese import?

Well the deal has been done I brought myself a 97' 1275 A+ with 77000kms on the clock. Everything you see in the photo (except the shovel and power cord!) plus a Weber 45 DCOE. I've just gotta get it to Perth now, strip it n fit it :D

I'll tell over a couple of beers sometime soon. I'll let you know about the Weber, I have twin SU's currently but I wouldn't mind running the Weber, no final decision made yet!

Do you even need to pull it down? We can run it as it sits there and make sure everything is ok

I wanted to get 1275 in the first place to strip and rebuild but with only 77000 kms on it I'm not sure if it needs it just yet! I don't want to bore it just for the sake of it as I want to try maximise its life. If it run ok might chuck it straight in and rebuild my 1100 as a kind of test run then do the 1275 in a few years!

Yeah looking at the pic. Everything looks clean and tidy. Not sure about the subframe bolts as I thought the rovers had 1 large mounting bolt. But I would say oull out your subframe complete and just drop this lot in.

Mind you that shovel looks pretty good too. I would have pushed a harder bargain. Your gonna need something to dig the grave when your missus finds out....

The guy I brought it off had it in a Moke so the subframe isn't a Rover one. He did all the hard work converting it to run on carbies and powder coated the subframe had all new steering, brake etc and then only covered 3000kms. Overall a pretty good deal (I'm just hoping it's not all too good to be true!).
