Yep a buggered lifter or push rod can cause a bad rattle. Usually comes with a buggered cam shaft

I hope its an issue with the top end.

Have a look at the top of the valve. Is there any mushrooming of the valve stem.

Hmmmm I wondered that might be replacing rod and said lifter. But will pull valves out as well for inspection

I was going to say that. Is it the rocker hitting the cover? You will have this sort of problem with those newer alloy rocker covers, it p#ssed me off so much I went back to an original cover.

why does the little stud on #2 have an extra washer on it? I bet someone has damaged that thread, stripped the nut and put the extra washer on it to pack it up. Shouldn't be using nylocks on those either

Simon, that extra `washer' is the keep plate for the rocker shaft grubscrew.
I think perhaps late motors had nyloc nuts on the 4 little studs, I've seen them on quite a few.

No worries.

Fingers cross you get to find what the issue is.

Valves do mushroom on the end.

I usually use an oil stone to debur the top of the valve before I try and push it thru the guide.

They should just push out by hand with little resistance.

To check to see if its bent see if will roll easily on a glass table top. Or use a straight edge.

Hopefully the valve will have a mark on the stem showing you have found the issue

When it happened on my car the valve guide grabbed the valve which wore the guide.

With the valve out does the guide look round

I am sure I posted a pic of my buggered valve guide in one of my posts

After fighting with windows 8.1  I managed to enlarge the pic and No7 rocker arm/cylinder 4 inlet is hitting the washer on the rear stud. The others look pretty close too.

The guide is the issue. They grab the valve, piston comes up and whacks the valve,

I would check all the guides. Replace it. I bet it is oval
