I had a bit of a play with the car tonight. drained the oil, got the oil filter off, and removed the water hose as i remembered it had been leaking and found this!

I'm guessing this is the water pump, which has corroded away. its filled with thick sludge, which I'm tipping is not good. Can you get new water pumps? if so, where and how much? If not I'm assuming its ally in which case i could just weld on a new bit of tube (I'm a welder/ sheetmetal worker by trade), then give the hole system a very good flush out with the garden hose and it should be alright?

I got the oil filter off and it had written on it "ROADCRAFT 573" can't say i've ever heard of this brand. Is there a Ryco equivalent i can use?

I gave the carby a bit of a clean so the makings a more clear, not that they mean anything to me yet

This Is the number I found on the gearbox i think.

And here are some pic's of the fuel pump, definitely electric, haven't tried to see if it works yet. Is this the type that are usually run?

Sorry for so many questions, but you've all been heaps of help so far!! :D :D :D

Water pumps are available everywhere. This is the one that you have. http://minikingdomonline.com.au/product ... -capacity/

Z418 is the standard spin on filter. Is yours a spin on?

The fuel pump is an SU type. There are points inside that make a ticking noise. If it isn't pumping give it a couple of hits on the body. It may need the points inside cleaned or replaced and the check valves cleaned or replaced.

22G1128 with FAXE ---- is a MK2 Cooper S box.

The 45 Weber is a decent size. If you can have a look down the carby intake there are venturies halfway down (also called chokes) these have a number on the outer edge. A stock to mild 1275 would have 34 chokes, 36 chokes for a worked motor.

I did think that the hand stamped serial number on the casing denoted what lies within but I can't find a list of what these numbers meant, someone older and wiser might.

That's an S.U points style pump. The contacts might need a clean but if it's ticking away when you crank it its working, though the diaphragm might be junk.

Nice Webber, Italian made.

Thanks again, more great info, and speedy too!

Yep it's a spin on filter so I'll pickup one of them. When you say water pumps are everywhere do you mean I can get them from Bursons or repco, or just any mini specialist?

I'll check out the fuel pump, and I'll have to have a look to see if I can see the numbers on the carby, I'm intrigued about what it is, the misses said it used to go pretty good when she drove it.

Repco etc can get a lot of the consumable parts but you will usually need to give them the part number to order it. I have found that the parts books they use can be a pain especially when you have a 50 year old car that has had an engine transplant. I usually get my parts from Karcraft, Minikingdomonline, Minisport SA, Leacyclassics UK is a good one as well, I hardly ever go to the local speed shops because the quality of the parts and service is far better from mini specialists. You will probably have a big list of things to buy so spending $10 or $15 in postage doesn't really matter.
Here is our list of mini specialists viewtopic.php?f=41&t=83593

I'd change all the radiator hoses as well

That little hose between pump and head could be a little crusty when removed

All you need is some heater hose there don't worry about the original type

Thanks for the link to the manual, I've booked marked it so hopefully now I won't have to ask so many questions lol.

I've found mini makeovers 1275 is not far from me, so that's handy to now too

Cheers

Hi Fusion07,

Personally I would stay well clear of 'Mini Makeover1275' from personal experience, and a few others on this forum. When I first got into minis I needed a new engine and thought they seemed good.

Since putting the Minimakeovers engine into my car (it was tuned corrently, and isn't driven hard)

* Oil leaks everywhere due to cheap gaskets being used
* blown head gasket due to a cheap head gasket being used
* engine has had to come out twice due to gearbox synchro issues
* on both new mini makeovers gearboxes 2nd continues to crunch
* 2nd and 3rd pop out of gear on slight downhills
* burns oil
* blows smoke
* broken valve springs!! due to cheap valve springs being used - the type of cam required more heavy duty springs due to valve acceleration (RE83)

This engine has done 4,000kms and is now already due for a rebuild! The engine hasn't been thrashed whatsoever and it is a disgrace that people can do business like this.

I'm sorry if I'm not allowed to say this on the forum, but this is all facts and I would be wary of recommending them to ANYONE.

Regards
James

Wow, That's a bit of bad luck you had there.
Did they come recommended to you by someone or did you get them from our list?

They have some stuff for sale on ebay, and sell complete engines there. There are some members on here that have had good experiences with them, some who have had bad. You can do a search if you want some more opinions on them.

There have been a few threads about him in the past. This one was my favourite one... viewtopic.php?f=2&t=67293

No, no one recommended them to me and at the time I wasn't a member of Ausmini. I basically browsed ebay and found all these wonderful looking engines that this bloke sold. I just didn't know any better.

You're basically paying $5,000+ for a nicely painted engine.
