When I had my Cooper in 1963 the oil temp was one thing that many people felt was a problem as it was going to get too hot and not lubricate properly as the oil was going break down quickly. Being a person who had to know what was happening I ended up fitting a temp sender unit in the in/out union to the filter (which ever it is) on the front of the engine and then put in another temp gauge same as the water temp gauge. I found that the oil temp never got above about half the water temp even on the hottest of days, so I was satisfied that there was no problem and left it at that. Just my observations from a long time ago.

So is there meant to be support brackets going down to the lower edge of the valance? Mine is just mounted on the folded section using 2 of the 4 screws on the base of the cooler.

yep - something like this: https://www.minispares.com/product/Clas ... A1794.aspx

they fit with the long flat facing forwards, inside the beaver panel. Mine (originals) have a double layer on the rearward half of the short flat and the forward half as a single layer. The forward half sits under the apron lip and the edge of the double layer butts up against the edge of the lip, making a flat platform for the cooler

I would like to see a picture of the original brackets next time you get a chance.

Fitted as Simon described.

If you really need a picture as fitted I can crawl under my 1970 S amongst the dirt, grease, spiders and cobwebs to get one. Just let me know. :)

No need. That picture is perfect. I can't remember if mine has the double layer of metal or not.
