Ok, don't say one has one speed and the other has two...

Is there any difference visually? I say that because I don't know if some nut has installed a single speed windscreen wiper in my Clubby or not. It only works at one speed, and I have taken it apart and checked it all, checked the switch etc. all to no avail.

I believe a 2 speed wiper motor unit should have 4 wires running to it where as a single will have only 3.

Hope I got that right way round

Cheers Dat

If you already took it apart, then its real easy - have a look at the brush gear - single speed motors have to brushes, 2 speed ones have an extra, notched brush.

Plus the big gearbox wheel is different (I think double speed = 3 metal strips on the wheel) and offcourse 4 forks for double speed (unless its a later MK4+ motor where there are only 3 forks)

It is possible to make a single speed motor have 2 speeds, was popular back in the `60s. What you do is put a switched resistor in series with the field? wiring. Was a long time ago.. lol. Can't remember what resistor value. This mod will reduce motor torque at higher speed, but does work.
 Use a variable resistor, like my Fiat had..

I have built a small circiut to give an intermitant sweep. Just like the 'real' ones it has a knob to vary the time between sweeps.

I'd like details on the above two posts - original single speed motor converted to two speed sounds just right for my Traveller!

I'd also like to have variable intermittent wipers on the van.

Kinda OT, but I'll ask anyway:

I fitted two speed wipers from a Clubby to the van, using a std K headlight switch to switch them. Problem, with the park circuit wire connected, there was some sort of short. As the wiper gear passed the "park" point, the dash lights would go dim! I've tried bypassing various wires between the switch and motor, tried a different motor, but it was still no better!

Eventaully I disconnected the park wire and now run without auto park.

I've obviously miswired somewhere, but where?? :?

OMG I'm a tool. I had two wires around the wrong way at the actual switch! LOL!

But while I was at it, I opened up all the switches and cleaned out all the crap inside.

It was a kit from DSE but is now not stocked - it is a Vellman Kit number P2599 but listed on their site as K2599 http://www.velleman.be/

When i get some time I'll drag out a 1 speed wiper motor and try to remember HOW I converted it to 2 speed, 35 years ago.. :?
I've still got a Fiat 124S wiper variable resistor to try. Maybe this time I'll have the first Lucas `variable speed' wipers!

if it's a Fiat, just speed up the video and the wiper speed appears normal.
