I did an inventory check yesterday - I have at least eight two piece flywheels. If you know someone going past near here let me know and we can work out something in terms of a pickup.

Yep - I've probably got a flywheel or 2 lying around surplus to requirements if needed....

I ended up tapping some new threads and it eventually came off without destroying my puller. I'm not really sure how this balancing business works - do I just get the flywheel itself balanced, or the whole flywheel+clutch assembly balanced together? Can anybody suggest a good place in Canberra to do this?

Cheers,
Harry

You usually bolt the flywheel to a balanced crank, balance the flywheel first (by drilling holes), then bolt the backplate on with the straps and balance that.
Then bolt the diaphragm on as well and check balance again. Try all 3 possible positions and choose the least out-of-balanced one.
If you are really anal you can perhaps drill a few small holes in, but it's so light it won't be far out anyway.

I did one recently where someone had bolted the backplate on and drilled a dirty big hole 24mm in it alone, to balance it AND the flywheel. Almost drilled right through it. I binned that backplate, I've seen what can happen.. they are grey iron and not real `bendable'.

You could always give Chris or Ian at Berco a call. They did all the machining on my last engine build and it's still in one piece.

Cheers,
Simon
